Help! My family ordered pizza and I'm on pre-op!

Recommended Posts

i cheated 3 times on my pre op. I caught hell about it from people on this site. I did the best I could. I had my surgery on Monday and it went fine. I survived. Do your best.

I know its bad but I cheated a little 8 days before my surgery. I had some mexican food...no as much as I usually would have but I went off my diet. The doc said my liver was perfect and I still lost 25.5 lbs on my preop. The last 3-4 days are what really matter to get ypur liver to the size and consistency for safe surgery.

My family made nachos the other night and I couldn't escape the smell no matter where I went in the house. Other smells of their dinners haven't bothered me, but for some reason the nachos was causing pangs of hunger. I used a trick we used in EMS when encountering very bad smells and rubbed a little mentholatum under my nose and that's all I could smell for the next couple of hours.

My pre-op diet recommends up to 5 Protein shakes per day. Maybe you could check with your surgeon to see if you could get in some more Protein?

I've been putting myself on a self-imposed/prepare yourself pre-op diet. pizza is always one of the hardest food to avoid while my family enjoys it. It's not merely head hunger, it's nose hunger, and body hunger too. I think you should get out of the house and tell them to recycle the box immediately and febreeze the house before you get home.

We're all behind you! You can do this!

I'm 7 days PostOp and last night my dad came over and brought a pie for the kids. I was stricken by the odor. It had me and it knew it. So I chewed a couple bites, spitting them into the trash each time. I even wiped my mouth out with a napkin lol.

The funny thing is, I have no hunger, and not thirst. What I put into my body is a conscious decision now. I actaully have to remind myself to eat on a schedule. And i'm totally loving that part. The smell thing triggered my brain, not my gut. I guess I'll be fighting my brain over smells for a while.

Be strong! Get to surgery as healthy as you can and you'll look back with pride as the new you doesn't have to struggle with that anymore.

Please I hope nobody reading this takes this statement seriously. Follow your docto'rs orders pertaining to your preop diet. The time it takes to shrink your liver is totally dependent on your liver and no one else's. If your surgeon thinks your liver is not sufficiently reduced come surgery time, a responsible surgeon will simply close you back up and you will have gone through the whole process for nothing. If he's cavalier then he could perform the surgery anyway, possibly risking a lacerated liver which can be fatal.

Rule #1: Life is unfair.

Rule #2: pizza are the Cosmos' cosmic joke for the Sleeve patient.

Rule #3: Refer to rules 1 and 2.

This will be the first of Many challenges that you will have. Maybe just think of it as 'them' catching up with all the extra stuff that we had before?

In any case hard is hard. Hard is not imposible. And you WILL feel good tomorrow if you can hold out. You don't need no stinking guilt! And follow Lipsticks advice. A fine excuse to curse.

Kyrie, I hope you took a walk and got out of there. That's not very supportive of your family, I hate to say.

I don't expect my husband to never eat pizza again, but we've had serious talks about the pre-op diet and the weeks following right after surgery (I'm pre-op too)...and he's agreed that if he wants any of the foods that are tempting to me, he'll eat them out of the house and away from me until I'm in the groove with my new way of eating. And I've promised not to be overly sensitive about it...

That also includes his watching the food Network for hours on end. He's agreed not to get all snarky if I need to remove myself to another room and work on a hobby for a while.

You're just days away from an amazing journey...you're gonna kick butt at it! :-)

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
