Is it bad to think of selling your child for a tortilla chip?

Recommended Posts

I just started my pre-op today. It has been less than 8 hours and I already am going nuts. I am on a pure second stage liquid diet. I am thinking about selling my oldest child for a tortilla chip, as long as it didn't count towards cheating. And keep in mind, I like her. (My youngest, I would sell for half a tortilla chip, but might not get any takers.)

How I admire all of you have successfully gone through this! I don't know if it is the idea I can't have anything or the fact that for the first time, I am actually hungry. I have been on a 1500 calorie diet for six months now, but this is different. Either way, I want to devour the whole pantry. I won't because I am a bleeping grown-up. But I sure as shooting want to.

Also, what is with these stupid headaches that go along with this??! grrr

As I hang here, holding on to the ledge, tell me it gets better? If not, lie to me.

Hi there.

I'm on Day 8 of my 2 week pre-op. It will get better, just be patient.

I have felt hunger over the past 8 days that I have never felt before. (I'm allowed two shakes and one meal w/ meat and veg in the evening.) I told my husband the other day, I don't crave any particular food, I just want food. I am hungry. But the weird thing is the hunger passes fairly quickly with some green tea or some Water. And, keep busy - that will make it easier, too.

Hang in there - it will get better and, believe it or not, it will get easier. You will find your groove.

Best of luck to you - just keep your eye on the prize.

It gets easier. The first 2-3 days will likely be your worst. Carbs are like crack in my humble opinion. Once you get past the cravings for them, the physical cravings anyway, it does get easier. Headaches are likely from a combination of carb withdrawal and reduced calories.

It does get better. Don't sell her for a tortilla chip. Hold out for cheesecake. Oh, wait. Strike that! Sorry. :P LOL

That reminds me of my youngest son. When he was little, his older/protective brother would worry incessantly over someone taking him when we were out shopping. He might be three feet away, but big brother was freaking out. I would tell him, "Don't worry. He's right here. I can reach out and touch him." Big brother "But, Ma, someone might take him!" Tired mom "Don't worry. They'd bring him back." Big brother laughs at that point and says, "Yeah. They probably would." in a fit of giggles.

It is hard to do the 2 week diet. I had to do 6 shakes a day for 2 weeks, no food! It doesn't get any better after the surgery I had 2 days of Clear Liquids and I am now just coming to the end of 2 weeks of regular liquids. Tomorrow I finally see the surgeon and I should start 2 weeks of pureed food! Good luck it's hard to just drink your meals.

I didn't have to do a diet before my surgery at all, just 2 days before surgery I had to only drink liquids.

PreOp diets... I GET that they're "supposed" to do something important in theory but I don't buy them really. Everyone I know cheated and everyone I know still got the sleeve and lost a ton of weight. lol

Well, I would agree with you but two weeks ago, we went on a Halloween cruise as a last hurrah, and I did enough damage to my liver, I better stick with the diet just in case. Thus, the 4 lb weight gain. But soooo worth it.

I am thinking of getting the shirt that says, "Hi, I am B_tchy! The 8th drawf!"

Thanks all for the encouragement. It helps so much to talk to people who have gone through this.

it's not bad that you are considering it, it's bad if you post an ad on craigslist for the trade. :)

I realize your concerns. However, I never said I was not going to follow the doctor's pre-op diet. In fact, I said that I was. Sheesh. I didn't mean to cause controversy. I just wanted to rant about how horrible the pre-op diet is. And it is horrible. I do not remember ever being this hungry before. However, I trust my doctor, and have done too much to get this far for him not to operate. (His words were, "If patient has only one bite, I will not operate.")

That being said, there does not seem to be an industry standard for pre-op diets. I have seen everything from 3 weeks to 24 hours. And everything from liquid diet to small meals. It is confusing.

And piercedqt, don't give me any ideas. ;)

I dont understand the dieting right before surgery. Dont all docs/ins companies require 3-6 months of med managed weight loss before surgery? I had to see a NUT weekly, show proof of an exercise program (she reviewed the past week on my pedometer), go on a prescription for phentermine, weigh in weekly, etc etc. I had to do just 3 months, and I lost 30 lbs (286-256). The only thing I had to do pre-op was NPO after midnight the night before.

let it be known I said that the craigslist ad was a bad idea. For a few reasons, 1. you can get something much better than a chip for your child. 2. trading children to strangers is a bad idea. 3. you will need said child's help post-op, better keep them around for a while longer.

Seriously, you can do this, and it is soooo worth it. I just posted in another thread, but will share here too, call your doc and ask if you can thicken some broth with corn starch, it makes it like egg drop Soup without the egg pieces. Some docs will ok this. If they do use a bowl and spoon to eat it, that helps to trick your body into feeling like it is getting actual food.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
