When will food go down easier?

Recommended Posts

Hello I am 9 days post-op and I am still finding it difficult to get food down. I want to advance soon to like chili or something but I still have issues with yogurt. I know its still early but can anyone tell me about when they were able to get thicker food down? And... about the tummy grumble... does it ever stop?

I'm 4 months post op and my tummy grumbles all the time.

I think I was able to comfortably eat around 2 months postop...proteins are always the hardest to get down but it gets easier.

Does that include say ground beef or shredded chicken or like steak?

Yes. I'm not sure on the steak cause I don't eat it. I mean I do eat red meat such as ground beef but I just don't like steak.

At first I had to eat super super slow and I was only able to handle maybe 3 bites at the most.

Now I am eating about 3-4 oz of chicken or deli meats or fish

I'm 8 days post op and think most of my swelling is gone. I can get full liquids down no problem. Thick stuff hurts a little but this thin soupy stuff slides right down.

It's actually kinda worrying me.

Is it normal for liquids not make me feel full? I know I have a smaller tummy, but it sure doesn't seem like it at times.

I think it's normal sometimes. I find that when I drink my liquids fast I don't feel full right away and then bam! All of sudden I'm really full! I have a horrible habit of guzzling my Water. Of course I don't guzzle the whole bottle but I have the tendency to drink it too fast. Still working in that.

If I drink it at intervals I can tolerate more. I'm no expert though, I'm 4 months out. Still learning. :)

I am a year out, and my stomach is still noisy. Not as noisy as it was in the beginning, but I doubt it completely goes away for most people. You get used to it!

I too worried about liquids going down too "easy" and not feeling full but I'm happy to say I've just gone to my mushy stage and you'll definitely feel full then, so don't stress :)

It will never get better, and you'll starve to death. Nah, just teasing! A better answer is "all too soon" because the struggling vets would LOVE to have a hard time eating. It would make life so much easier!

It's different for everyone and each person here can give you a different answer. I had trouble eating much of anything until more than a year post op. Incredibly small portions (less than an egg, less than an ounce of soup) would make me incredibly full and cause discomfort.

If any food gives you any discomfort you should back off of it. Retry it in a week or so. Discomfort and pain are your stop signals. So if it's hard to eat something? Stop. Come back to it and try it again later.

My stomach quieted a bit sometime after the first year, but I'm three years out and it still serenades my husband and I to sleep some nights, or makes so many gurgles we need to turn the television up.

Congrats on that new sleeve, and good luck!

I'm 7 weeks post of as of yesterday, and it is definitely still a struggle. I agree with others though, it has been trial and error. Some things bothered me at the time and then I tried again a couple weeks. Some days are also easier than others. Yesterday was a not so good day for me..... could only manage to get down about 300 calories and it should be much more by now

Hello I am 9 days post-op and I am still finding it difficult to get food down.

Our recommended diets vary quite a bit......at 9 days out I was still on full liquids (shakes, yogurt)......at 14 days out I was allowed to have pureed foods, 21 days out I should have been on soft foods, but nothing sat well unless it was pureed with a stick blender......a month out I was able to switch over to real foods, but sometimes that didn't sit well, and I pureed a few items.

I think somewhere between 2 & 3 months things got much easier......if it doesn't feel good, try pureeing them.........they should be moist. I now use my crock pot weekly, and the moist Protein from there is so much easier to digest......

Hope this helps! Good luck. (PS my tummy stopped grumbling for the most part recently--around 3 months)

just wait 3-4 days and try yogurt again, if you still have issues wait 3-4 more days and try again, it gets easier. you should start tolerating yogurt rather fast.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
