When did you try breads?

I'm 4 months out now, and I know I can start to introduce everything again (and I have been). The one thing I haven't tried are the breads and pastas. I've been afraid. One, I'm afraid of craving them again like I used to, and two...well, you hear horror stories about it getting stuck and everything.

When did you try to eat breads? And how was it for you?

I've done crackers, matzo, and corn tortillas...

That's one thing I'm going to try to eliminate from my diet. For me it's going to be P&P....protein and produce

My advice: DON'T TRY THEM! (I know that's totally unrealistic). My NUT said I could start introducing breads/carbs into my diet at 5-6 weeks and so, being the food addict I am, I ran out and tried eating a piece of toast. Slid down with no problem at all. Wanted more. Very scary experience. I have to treat sugar and bread like crack cocaine. I can't be trust to have "just a little." I know that this isn't everyone's experience....

My surgeon said no carbs until I lose 75 percent of my excess body weight. I eat only Protein and veggies right now an I'm 12 weeks out

I am 5 months out and just had my first Pasta the other week. I have had bread as part of sandwiches since about 2 mos. out. I definitely loved carbs pre-surgery, but post-op I don't crave them and, while I don't have any issue with them making me feel uncomfortable, I really just enjoy a few bites as part of what I am eating

I'm a little over a month out and got to add toast to my diet this past week. Untoasted bread, Pasta, and rice can be added back in at 8 weeks post-op per my office.

Thanks everyone! Maybe I won't crave it so much after all. I'm thinking now that maybe it's because I haven't had it that I want it (that forbidden food thing...). I don't eat much anyway, so it wouldn't be a huge amount. But...I try to allow myself other things once in a while (ie: ice cream LOL) just so I don't make this feel like a diet and allow myself that treat every so often. Maybe I'll feel more comfortable with the idea soon and try it :)

If I don't let myself try something that I want, I tend to fixate on it and blow it out of proportion. So, when I was able (3 1/2 months out now), I tried different breads after I'd eaten Protein and veggies, if I had room. I loved bread before surgery and it was one of the hardest things for me to give up. When I started trying breads, I was amazed to find that pretty much, they tasted like nothing! They just weren't worth wasting my small amount of carbs and calories I had to use. The KFC biscuit- buttery, flakey pillowy goodness I love tasted like a hunk of cotton, one tiny bite, I was done. Same with the Olive Garden breadsticks, wheat bread toast, etc. I just tasted yeast- no other flavor at all. It was so surprising to me and I'm glad

I tried them, because now I can just leave them alone happily and not drool imagining what my tablemates are enjoying. This plan worked well for me, because I can do things in moderation and stop eating something (I have 1oz of dark 70% chocolate every week or so), but this isn't advisable if you have an "all or nothing" approach. It'll be interesting to see what you think after/if you decide to try some bread!

bread doesn't sit the best with me anymore. It's a blessing really cause I loved it so much. I make pizzas using low carb tortillas as crust that's about it. I'm 3 months post op, lost 35 lbs which is slow but my nut told me that the slower it comes off the less saggy skin and stays off for good meaning less likely to regain. Good luck and if you are dying for bread, eat a soft small pretzel

I tried toast at 2 months no problem but i had to eat it extra slow and give it time between bites to signal when was enough. it did seem to want to swell and i ate only a bit but did well. unfortunately Pasta was way too easy, no problem at all.

i am with you, the real reason i hardly ever touch either is that i love them. Although once you have had anything stuck in the esophagus for an hour that will cure you ( for a while). I am avoiding rice still, for it was so much a favorite my family thought i was culturally chinese. :)

I am terrified to try it. I am 14 weeks out..have 25 lbs to goal. I am literally terrified of all sugar and flour products. I only eat pita crackers once in a while. I havent had any other white carb. I am scared I will eat it and gain 10 lbs..or start to crave them again. I don't know if I will ever get past it. Its like an abusive relationship for me. Eventhough it was my fault, I feel those things are thr enemy and I am scared to let them back in.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
