December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

Started phase two yesterday while at hospital. Got the ok to leave at 5 pm and had a hard time sleeping (miss that lovely hospital bed) but am moving quite a bit. What helped me was second and third day at hospital i started walking and was able to pass gas third day at hospital. Still have not been able to do a bowel movement (dec 16th sleeved) but I believe it will come in time ... Have been taking my Water but the Protein Shakes i am not a big fan of so making it harder to have the Protein and all other minerals needed (which also explains the bowel movement issue) i am still glad I made the decision and know that the discomfort will go away. Had a great surgical team from care assistants, to nurses, to anesthesiologists, hospital and doctor staff. Looking forward to seeing doc on 10 day post op and showing some great results and getting ok for phase three. Oh, lost 10 lbs so far ... Key part of the loss is pushing the gas out and walking. They took the catheter out first day and drain last day of hospital ... I was walking and that facilitated in the loss of extra fluids and gas.

You can do this. It is temporary pain for a great long term effect. Keep reminding yourself of the finish line.

Started weight pre op diet: 277

After pre op diet: 266 (11 lbs lost in two weeks of preop diet)

Weight so far: 256 (10 lbs lost while in hospital after surgery.

Goal weight: 177 (100 lbs deficit)

I am 33 yr 5'11 female.

Walk it off. That is the best advice I received and I am seeing the results.

Hi all. My name is Meli. Had my surgery 2 days ago on the 17th in the beautiful South Florida! Everything went perfect according to the surgeon and I had my leak test yesterday - no problems. I'm still at the hospital, still in pain but waiting it out :)

Hi all! I'm new on here and was sleeved on 12/09. My weight the day of surgery was 224 and I'm now down to 214 (I'm about 5'4). Still experiencing the left sided pain, which my surgeon said was normal since that's the side they pull your stomach out of. I can't wait until next week when I can start experimenting with soft foods. Getting enough Protein in a day is still a challenge, but it's getting easier everyday.

Good luck to everyone getting sleeved tomorrow :-)

I was sleeved 12/10 (and then more surgery 12/15 for internal bleeding) and doing ok now. Having difficulty getting in protein, as the shakes make me gag. I'm probably only getting 15 grams of protein a day now, which is not good. Looking forward to mushy stage next week.

Ready to head to the hospital. I think it is finally starting to hit me (nausea)!

Prayers going out to Dec. 19th sleevers and those in recovery.

Save me a spot on the loosers' bench. :D

Surgery was yesterday and the Dr said everything look good and no problems with gallbladder or hernia. Left shoulder pain was off the chart. I tried to stay on top of the pain through out the night which helped. I've been peeing like race horse since they filled me with 5 liters of Fluid before and durning surgery so a lot of good losing 10 lbs on the pre-op diet. Lol. The drain was removed this am and the shoulder pain is all most gone. So far tolerating liquids, ice chips, and Jello. Start Protein Shakes at lunch brought some of my own in case I didn't like the ones here. Been up and walking or sitting in rocking chair whIch helped with the left shoulder pain. Thinking of everyone having surgery today and fri. God bless you. Btw the staff here have been lovely and accommodating. Most of the nurses have been through some type of bariatic surgery themselves so they have a great amount compassion.

My first day of Protein shakes!!! Woo hoo!! 7 days out and excited cause I'm sick of broth and sf Jello and Popsicles

Seem to be tolerating GNCs total lean shake (vanilla bean) pretty well; almost like a treat for me. I liked it before my VSG as well so glad that hasn't changed. My NUT won't allow me to blend any fruit in it just yet due to hiatal hernia repair work.

Glad your doing better. You will get there on the protein soon it takes time. I was sleeved on the 13 th and I still have trouble getting in enought protein too. It is getting better everyday. The shakes have been making me sick too. I found I had to try different types. I found yogurt was the best thing to feel better.

I'm going home shortly, yes!! My surgeon and the hospital were just amazing through my whole experience. The meds were good, the care was good, gas is finally almost gone. Just a little sore on the left which is to be expected. Incisions so small I won't notice them when healed. I had so much anxiety going into this but I was prepared in mind and body and now I am having no regrets at all. Everyone on the forum has helped so much I can't thank you all enough for tips and advice and support!! I hope all the December people do well and happy holidays to all :)

Things are finally falling into place for me. Relieved to finally have my preadmission testing scheduled for tomorrow. Just got word of my insurance approval TODAY! Talk about cutting it close, tomorrow was the last chance to get approval. All is well.

Down to the 200's again: 310.8 on day one of preop diet, 299.8 today. That's a pound a day!

Glad everyone seems to be doing ok. Good luck to those coming up!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
