Dr. Watkins at Cincinnati weight loss performed my GPS last week (jan 18th). My husband, Bill and i flew from Arkansas there for me to have the surgery. Dr. Watkins and his staff are amazing. All screening, consultations and medical record information, authorization forms, surgical center registration, etc. was done via telephone, email, etc.

We came in early the day before the surgery and since we had early flights I had asked if I could stop by the office and meet everyone. I met with Diana and discussed my last few questions and was then introduced around the office to meet the other staff members that I had spoken with on the phone.

Dr. Watkins was not in the office when we arrived and I honestly didn't expect to see him since we didn't have an appointment but I was informed that he had left instructions to be paged when I arrived so he could could come back to meet me and discuss any questions Bill or I might have.

Speaking with Dr. Watkins, in person, before the surgery really helped my anxiety level. He is very kind, considerate and supportive in addition to being very accomplished in his speciality.

Bill and I also decided to stop by the surgery center and check it out. We met with one of the nurses named Connie who stopped what she was doing and took us on a tour of the facility.

As for the surgery, everything went as scheduled. I had a problem with pain level when I first came out of surgery but the competent staff addressed it quickly while I was in recovery. After that I slept a lot but my husband told me that Dr. Watkins checked on me several times. The surgical center staff was so attentive, the rooms were nice and I am very grateful for them taking such good care of me and being there to keep Bill updated so he didn't have to worry.

In summary I would 100% recommend Dr. Watkins, his staff and the UC surgical center without any reservations.

I had my plication done by Watkins over 10 months ago. He and his staff are very kind. I had a good experience there. I was shocked at how little pain I had, and my scars are tiny.

Sadly, I have not any restriction for a few months now. Turns out that I have a dilated fundus. I need to have is surgically fixed. This did not happen from over eating, so I am not sure why this happened. doctor said it was not my fault, things just happen. food sits in that pocket and causes me pain before it moves into the part of my stomach that is plicated still. I cant live like this much longer. It is so annoying.

I honestly wish I just stayed in my home state and had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

Watkins was nice enough, but I think I would make a different choice knowing what I know now.

Hi Lmom1980 ! Sorry to hear of your experience. Is that a common problem after gp? How do they fix it? Is doctor watkins able to fix it? I was told that they cover 2years of follow up care regarding the plication. I thank you for responding. I live in pa and i am not sure where i would even be able to get the sleeve done-i have considered it. I am worried about leakage yet my sister had bypass 7 years ago with no issues or leakage. Hope to hear from you soon & I hope you get some kind of Relief!

OMG. Dialated Fundus. That sounds awful. I am so sorry to hear that you are now dealing with such pain. That must be very frustrating and disheartening after all you have gone through to get this surgery and try to get yourself to a more healthy weight.

I chose GPS as it was the only option that I could wrap my mind around as a possible solution that I could live with but I do realize after reading so many reviews that restriction is a very delicate and possibly temporary state. I just hope I will be able to get off most of my excess weight before my restriction goes away. I also pray that my change in eating habits and increased exercise will allow me to maintain that weight loss through traditional methods of weight control.

I don't want to sound like "PolyAnna" but I do acknowledge the challenges I may face. As for the pain you are dealing with, well that is a whole different issue and I hope that I am not dealing with that in a few months as like you, I would find life like that intolerable for any length of time.

Please keep us updated on what will be done to fix your dilated fundus and how your recovery goes after that. I wish you the best outcome possible.

I had surgery on Tuesday. I feel like a truck hit me. Much worse then my original plication. Yesterday and Today, I was lucky to get maybe 50 oz of water/gatorade. trying to force myself to drink more so I don't end up back in the hospital from dehydration. I am happy that the problem was discovered, and now hopefully I will be free from that pain, and have that restricted feeling again. I just wish I had a crystal ball so I can look into the future two weeks from now, and see myself pain free, and satisfied on small meals. I barely paid off my original procedure, and now I am back in debt again, but I didn't really see what other choice I had. Thank heavens for my supportive and patient Husband.

Hang in there, LMom, It WILL get better! It'll all be worth it. One day at a time and drink those fluids! And get that Protein in! You know the drill!

I was just coming on this forum to ask you what they planned to do LMom. I'm glad you were able to get surgery so soon. Hang in there! My plication was easy, but my GB surgery hit me like a ton of bricks. I have heard that it takes a year to recover from a surgery...so when we have two in a year or so, I'm sure it adds up. Take care of yourself and try to keep a positive attitude! (I know, it's hard)

Thanks chow chows

I really thought my pain was from my gallbladder too. Now, knowing my luck, I will recover from my second stomach surgery, and then need my gallbladder out. I know, that is not keeping a positive attitude...lol. I am feeling much better today, but this 2 nd surgery, has been harder then the first one for sure. I will keep you posted.

I was plicated on December 22 by the "other" Cincinnati area surgical center - Dr. Trace Curry at Journey Lite. I also had a great experience and love his staff. Just wanted to throw that out there!

Here in Australia, there aren't too many options as it is considered very new. My GP has connections in the field so that's how I found out about it. My doc, Dr George Hopkins, I *think* is considered the best or one of the very best in Oz. He keeps very up to date with the latest info and techniques and has even done the operation on another WLS surgeon!

How much was original surgery and did you compare that to sleeve or bypass? Or was the type of surgery more your concern?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
