I'm sitting here waiting for the vet to come and put my dog to sleep. Her kidneys are failing and she has a host of other health issues, too. It's time to do the right thing (but so hard!).

We adopted Tally, our Dachshund, 14 years ago at the age of one. She's a beautiful, funny girl and we had all those good years with her. She's terrified of her vet's office so I have a mobile vet coming to the house in a half hour. She can die as peacefully as possible while I am holding her. Poor sweet little Tallybelle. :-(

It is such a difficult time, please have strength in knowing you are not letting her suffer anymore. Did you ever read the "Dog's Prayer"? I cannot read it without crying. That prayer gives me strength when its time to put a family member down. Hold her memories in your heart !!!

The mobile vet was wonderful. She made a difficult time a little easier for us both. She sedated Tally while I held her, talked to her and pet her. Tally was very relaxed and calm. When I was ready she gave her the second shot and Tally just closed her eyes and was gone. I cried like a baby for an hour but I know it was time. They don't live near long enough...

Thank you for your kind words.

I'm crying with you. As a fellow pet mom, I understand how much love you had for your baby and how hard that must've been. I know she is so thankful that she had a kind & loving owner who allowed her to be free of all the pain she was going through.

If you are religious and believe in heaven, I highly recommend reading The Rainbow Bridge. It talks about a place where all our pets go when they pass and how they happily wait, free of pain & sadness, for us until we are reunited with them in heaven. I know it brought me so much peace.

*Big Hugs*

I'm sooo sorry for your loss...I still mourn the boxer I lost in 2010... I miss him all the time.. It gets easier with time ... You did an incredibly hard, unselfish thing. Your dog will always love you.

My condolences. I had a wonderful Dachshund for 13 yrs, Schnapps. He hiked up Mt. Washington in New Hampshire with us, and slept under my covers as a kid. A great combination of sporty and lap dog, and so wonderfully naughty, loving to disobey. Glad you had her.

I'm so sorry for your loss. That's one of the worst things about having furry children. I hope your heart mends quickly and you can remember all the joy she brought to you.

Yep, crying now too. And I haven't lost a pet since 2005.

Huge dog lover here and my heart truly goes out to you. I know all too well what you're feeling. I cannot, and do not want to, imagine my life without a four legged best friend. You never forget those friends. But I hope that when the time is right, you'll get another furry person. Nothing, absolutely nothing, will put a smile on your face and a song in your heart - like a puppy!

Thank you again, everyone, for your kind words and sympathy. I do have two boy Dachshunds who are eight years old. God willing, we'll have them with us a long time yet. Each dog is unique and, though I have two others, I will miss my sweet girl.

I find the hardest thing in the world to do is choosing to end the life of someone you love. I know in my HEAD that it was necessary, but in my HEART it feels like I killed a dear friend. That is what is tearing me apart. :-(

It's just too fresh...

I am an animal control officer and have talked to many people about this decision. It is never easy, but I always remember what my mom has told me - the pets will tell you when it is time. They Give you a look and you know at that moment it is time. You did the right thing for her, and although you hurt now she no longer does. That is what I hold onto when I have had to make this decision. In a few days one of your boys will do something that will make you laugh and you will remember the good times with her.

Have a good cry tonight while holding your boys. If they are like some of my animals they will give you the - mommas gone crazy look, but will allow you to be crazy!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
