November surgeries?

Recommended Posts

Wow. My surgery was 11/19 and I have had an almost 3 wk stall. I have only lost 6 lbs in the last 3 1/2 weeks, 36 total. I am so disappointed. Now I see a 1/2 lb loss maybe once or twice a week. My granddaughter says it may be because of my age...69. Also, I have not been able to walk that much since I wrenched my back on Thanksgiving. I guess it will eventually come off, just feel like so many others are so lucky to see big weight losses. My clothes are getting a little big, but nothing like the size drops I hear about. Just discouraged.

Don't be discouraged, it will come off! What I found when I had my first stall was that as soon as I increases my calories it started coming off again. Make sure you're getting enough calories otherwise your body goes into starvation mode and doesn't want to burn the fat away. My doc said about 2lbs a week is expected, or 1% of total weight. They also said right at 6-8 weeks is when the weight loss will start to slow down and become more steady instead of rapid unless you introduce more calories combined with exercise. I'm out of town visiting family right now and they have no scale! It's driving me nuts to not know how I've done. Especially since this trip has been really challenging trying to get enough Protein in and eat healthy when the only thing around is unhealthy food. Keep your head up and good luck!

Thanks so much. I know I am not getting in enough calories. I get my Protein in at least. I did eat a whole bowl of chicken broth yesterday. It's the most I've eaten since surgery. Hopefully I can find more to eat now. Coming off puréed foods on Monday. Maybe that will help if I can find something appetizing.

Seems we are all suffering the same journey. Stupid stall. I have lost inches, but nothing like a lot of my Facebook friends.

Happy New Year to all of us and especially to the November group! . Had my almost 6 week follow up.. Thrilled to hear I am at the 42% loss ! This after I was stalled at 4 weeks out and for 10 days lost and gained the same ONE pound! Feeling great and working out 5 days a week IS moving the scale down again.. At 64 I never even knew how to use equipment in gym ( other than walking lol ) I think I might actually enjoy it and my old folks swim class . ddc75cdfca.. Feeling kinda proud of the changes and my 10 Grandkids helping me find some "cool" outfits ...

My Dr told me that because I had a low BMI to start with, and also my age..69, that I would lose at a much slower rate. At least that explains 6 lbs in 6 weeks. I have made a pack to not get on scale very much so I won't get discouraged. I love that your grandkids are helping you. Because of my back injury on Thanksgiving, I am not getting in the exercise I need. Am going to try harder in the new year.

I went to my Dr for 6 wk check up. Asked about the fact that I have not been losing as fast as some of my FB friends and also had 2-3 wk stall. I was told that because my BMI was low to start with, I would lose at a much slower pace. Was also told that because I am 69 that I would also lose much slower. So I decided not to get on the scales that much and be happy with the fact that what I most wanted to accomplish was getting off my medications. I no longer take 5 medications and of the 3 left, they are at half the dose of pre surgery and 2 will probably be gone soon. So my clothes are way too big and I am definitely losing inches. I am happy, forget the scale, it just depressed me and I am happy for what I am doing to make myself healthy. I will get there, no rush.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
