8/21/13 Gastric Bypass Story

Recommended Posts

Well, I am post-op day 1 gastric bypass (roux-en-y). Highest weight 299 lbs, day of surgery 278 lbs. My journey began on March 16th 2013 at Dr. Roller's seminar in northwest arkansas. Had to a 3 month nutritional counseling. My first appointment consisted of a complete history, lab work, h. pylori test, ekg, pulmonary function test, and chest x-ray. Next came the egd and pyschological evaluation. Once approved my surgery date of 8/21/13 was scheduled. 1 week pre-op I was told to do 2 Meal Replacement shakes and a healthy meal a day. The day before surgery was clear liquid and the amazing mag citrate bowel prep. I have never had any major surgeries before and really no major health problems other than hypothyroid and polycystic ovarian syndrome. Needless to say I was super nervous, scared of causing myself more problems. The thing that overcame that fear was my dream of having a baby and just being smaller and more active for the first time in my life. I have always been obese..starting 1st-2nd grade. Anyways, arrived at the hospital at 7:15 am to check in. 4 pokes later an iv was established. I was taken back to surgery around 9:30 am and taken to my room on the floor around 12:30. Had some issues with my oxygen dropping but nothing a few liters couldn't fix. Had problems taking in deep breaths due to the amount of gas pain i was feeling in my chest. Just took my breath away. Most of the gas pain is caused from them filling your abdomen with co2 so they can see better and it gets trapped in there. As far as actual lap site pain--was suprised that I didn't really have any. Ended up with 6 small lap sites. Was up in the chair and walking by 4pm. Had a morphine pca which didnt help my pain much, it just knocked me out and made me sleep. Pod #1 foley catheter removed, ivf slowed down, telemetry box dc'd. At 8am, started on 30 ml's/1oz of Water per hour x 2 hours. Just took very tiny sips and tolerated it well. After this the morphine was discontinued and I was given liquid lortab for pain. it was amazing how much better that worked. still makes me sleepy but very good at controlling discomfort as well. At 10 am was given 60 ml's/2oz to drink in the first 15 minutes of the hour, then 30 ml's of water every 15 minutes for the rest of the hour..then repeat at the top of the next hour. I have to say I have been taking it slow and sipping and have had no nausea or any other issues. So wierd to be full from that small of an amount. I have been walking a hole into the halls here. Surgeon told me I was doing amazing and all my bloodwork looked good. The plan is for the nurse to call the md around 3pm to update him then hopefully i can go home. Ready to be home but so far it has been a pretty pleasant experience considering I really had no idea what to expect. If anybody has any questions or comments feel free to leave them for me. I enjoy reading everybodys experiences (good or bad) to help me prepare for what's ahead. Good luck everyone!!

Smiley,

Don't know how I missed you. Was you at physician specialty for your procedure? My surgery was the same day by Dr. Kwon at Roller's office.

I had a hard time getting the room temp Protein and Water down but they released me at 3:00 PM the day after also.

My wife and I was walking the halls within three to four hours after moving to my room.

I ham now getting my Protein and Water down with no problem - as long as it is cool I still like the taste of the Premier Protein.

Good luck with your journey,

Post updates...

Rick

Not getting enough Protein at all tho....my tastes have changed due to the ketosis but i'm staying hydrated. Go for my 2 week post-op appt on the 5th. Excited to advance my diet and find out why my weight won't budge lol.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
