What is gal to do?

Recommended Posts

I have no health insurance, and have been checking into surgery in Mexico. I would totally do it as I have been researching forever. Problem is I am waiting for SSI to approve or deny my claim *this could take up to 2 years! In the meantime I cannot work not only because of my health but because if I bring in any money I will be disqualified for SSI! I cannot so far get financing as my hubby and I are one year out from a bankcruptcy.

So my question is...what is someone like me to do? I know people think this surgery is just plastic surgery or really not needed. But, without going into long details I have 2 medical disorders that have caused this weight gain to begin with...and this is just about my only option according to Doctors. I am soooooo frustrated I could just die!

Dahlia,

I have heard of some weightloss centers offer financing options. Some, even with credit issues. Hopefully SSI will approve your claim quicker. I have read some people had to wait a year before approval. However, it would be good if you start your preop diet ways as soon as you can. You know, trying to make small changes every day. This is what my weightloss center told me to do. At my weightloss clinic, you can take the preop classes by phone for about $250. Perhaps you can get some of the steps required done. Just an idea.

You should try Cashcall.com They give money to everyone who has a check coming in, regardless of credit (from what I understand). Ask them about the BK, how long after can you apply? That could be $10,000 right there.

Just an idea.

Insurance would not approve me. I sold my car, and drove around a pile of junk so that I could have the band.

I would have sold anything - I wasn't even at the point you are where my health was adversely affected to the degree I could not work - but I know the burning I had to get it done, because I could feel my health fraying at the edges, beginning to unravel.

So keep plugging away, and stay positive, I know you want it YESTERDAY, I sure did. But I started doing all the little things I needed to do, working all the little angles.

I agree that weight loss will help many physical conditions, and health care companies should look at it that way - I wonder why they don't.

I have GREAT insurance - and they absolutely would not do it for ANY of us with the policy - NONE. It was mind boggling.

I went to mexico and got it done for $8000.00

It was a great experience. We went through a bankruptcy too and had no insurance. We sold a car, garage sale, ebay sales and any cash we stashed plus a little help from family and I was able to pay for it. Don't be afraid of Mexico, it is a option......If it is what you want then do all you can and make it happen, you will be be so glad!

Good luck!

Just s thought.... If you are disabled and have gotten into financial problems because of it, you may have to wait until that stuff gets straightened out before you can self pay for the band. That just may be the reality. Disability can definitely take several years to get, and it may partly be based on the illnesses that you are hoping to correct after you are banded. I hate to say it, but maybe things are happening in the order they are going to happen....... The band is expensive and necessary, and so is getting things righted for your family financially. Maybe your plan should include what you want to do in the interim until the band is a reality for you.

Because of your age can tell you it will be a b*tch for you to get SSI, I went through it with my husband! If you want some help with it please let me know. I went in front of the judge when we were told by EVERY lawyer we could find that there was no way a man of 28 was getting disability and I got it for him. The judge actually asked me when I was graduating from law school. (I am not in law school...lol...)

PM your email, I would be more than happy to help you!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
