Hello! and am I making the right choice?

I have been lurking over a month and reading alot! I'm here because my cardiologist and my PCP recommended surgery. I'm a 39 yr old male with a history of dieting and a long love affair with food. Last year I had 2 stents put in my heart and was forced to retire from my job, besides stents I am diagnosed with sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high lipid counts yes all of them especially triglycerides (1500 range w/o meds). I decided i would like to be around for my boys ages 6 and 4 so here I am with the support of my doctors and a very apprehensive wife. I thought about the sleeve but it seems in the forum for that surgery that the complication rate is higher, this scares the you know what out me because right after my stents were put in a few months later I had an emergency appendectamy followed by an infection and leakage into my guts (a not so fun 9 days in the hospital). I have done my research on both surgeries and I am going with old faithful Rny. My question is this Does any one here wish they had the sleeve instead of Rny? just looking for reassurance. Thank you in advance. :D

Hello,

I prefer bottled water. You can have sugar free drink packages to add to flavor it. Crystal light, walmart has a brand, etc.

Post-op i craved just cold water.

I suggest you look into bariatric choice or pantry. I figuredbif i have to deink or eat it might as well have protein in it.

This is just a start i am sure if you search there are tons more of ideas. I thought i would help get you started.

Thanks for the suggestions I also have to get my hospital bag set up. I know my date will be here before I know it.

Chapstick, if your not allowed anything to drink then mouth moisturizer its like artificial spit. Comfortable stretchy pants. I had a cathater and once that came out i put pj bottoms on. Toiletries..toothbrush etc.

I have papaya chewable enzymes and gas ex strips but some people like chewable gas ex. Check with your doctor to make sure he is ok wirh the products.

Thanx. :-)

All I can say is I had the RNY 9 months ago and couldn't be happier. My two year stint with Weight Watchers did much to prepare me for post-op life. I agree with other posters - do your research - but don't let the scary stories stop you if you are sure this is right for you. I read some whoppers that were pretty frightening but I agree with other posters, most of the unhappy folks weren't following the rules and tried to eat like they would before surgery which propmptly made them sick. Some folks had unfortunate complications but once they resolved the majority of them were happy with their decision. I had folks beg me not to do the surgery but I just knew i was doing the right thing - and it was. Best wishes on your decison.

This is so true I'm one who had compactions after surgery I did everything right did 1 month pre op diet loss 30 lbs before my surgery went great only found a Hernia but Dr took care of it spent 18 days in hospital at 3 different time after surgery in less then a month But I WOULD not go back for anything I'm great now danced for 2 hours at a dinner function my Dr has yearly for his patients 4 months ago there's no way I could have done this so no regrets except I would like to get rid of some of this skin especially my arms but will all happen in time I'm down 80 lbs Surgery was Feb 14,2013

I really needed this feedback today. Thank you it was one of those weekends where friends had me second guessing myself, I know i'm on the right track but it seems like i'm a train and a few people are trying to derail me.

I walked one mile today. With fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis i could barely shop.

Energy is amazing and yes there are days i have to rest.

If you ever second guess yourself look at posts. All people hear are the bad things....hardly the good but in the end its your decesion.

Doesnt mean the road will be easy but its so worth it.

Talk with God and see how he feels about it too.

Hey Missy great to here from you hope all is well. Thanks for checking on me, it's going I' ll put it that way. I got my pulmonary clearance recently all I need is my cardiologist clearance and my endoscopy both scheduled for August oh and 3 more weigh-in's with my Nut. Looks like October or November for a surgery date. Starting to get a ill' nervous.

So far so good all I have left is my cardiologist and pulmonologist appointments left then its a matter of waiting for GHI so hopefully my surgery should be somewhere in late october yeah just in time for the Holidays! My Bariatric surgeon did mention I might have to take stomach meds along with my plavix so I dont get an ulcer down the road i dont know how I feel about this yet. Thanks Missy hope all is well with you.

I believe all RNY patients take Prilosec after surgery. My doctor says we may be able to stop them after 1 year.
