Hypothyroidism and Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

I starting gaining weight years ago and found out it was being caused by hypothyroidism. I am on snythroid. However losing weight on my own is impossible. Despite an almost perfect diet and hours and hours at the gym I can not lose weight. It is very discouraging. I am scheduled for roux en y surgery in march. I am a self pay patient and have over 100 pounds to lose. My question is though.... Is it possible to lose weight with gastric bypass if you have hypothyroidism? I don't want to spend $22k and endure dumping and such if I am destined to be overweight because of the thyroid problem. Please please tell me how it worked or didn't work for you? Thanks so much!!! :)

I suffer from hypothyroidism and pcos so I have a double hit...now I'm only 5 days post op but I am down 27lbs from jan 20 (date of pre op diet start). I'd say from my experience so far, it works.....if u don't stray from the guidlines....but like I said...I'm new to this!

I've had hypothyroidism for a while but, my doc wouldn't give me medication for it because she claimed it was only slightly hypo. Well for years, I've been with her about 29 years, I've been fighting my weight. In 2005 while going through testing for the lapband, that hospital showed you your bloodwork online. I saw the TSH level in red. Asked my doc and she said it was hypo but, she didn't wan to over medicate. Now after the initial lapband, a lapband revision, the lapband removal and in 7/2012 RNY....it's still hypo. I have lost 70 pounds since 7/11/12 which is AWEsome for me! I've lost much slower than others but, I'm thankful the 70 is gone. At my 6 month checkup my RNY surgeon said my TSH was low and she wanted me to see an Endocrinologist. AMEN someone is finally paying attention!!!!! So she told my PCP, I emailed my PCP and I made the dang appointment myself. Unfortunately can't see the endocrinologist until April. The email to my doc worked...she finally read my bloodwork and put me on meds. I've been on them less than a week but, yahoo the scale finally moved! I'm hoping this helps me keep moving down the scale. So to answer your question it is still possible to lose weight on RNY with Hypothyroidism. If you're not taking meds for it you may want to push that prior to the surgery to see if it helps before hand. If you are taking them...I can bet RNY will still help you lose. Best to ask your doc...or attend an information night at a bariatric center and ask that question :)

Hi, I also have hypothyroidism. I am 6 months post surgery and have lost 103lbs. I was taking 175mg of synthroid and it was recently lowered to 150mg. It is definately possible to lose weight with RNY if you have hypothyroidism. Hope this helps.. Good luck to you.

I also have hypothyroidism. I had it mostly when I was a kid, but as an adult I had been tested many times and was always told my levels were fine, while not on medication. Now when I went for my preop labs they said my levels were slightly high, so I'm hoping it won't effect my weight loss too much.

Hi, I was worried too. I have hypothyroidism...I have had it since the 90's...I am now a little over a month out..and I have lost over 35 lbs...Considering all things..I am very happy I had the surgery! I didn't lose anything the first week...and in fact I gained from the fluids in the hospital..needless to say..I was freaked out! BUT...it started dropping off...and now I'm in clothes I had put away because they didn't fit anymore. It's a great feeling!

I know is an expensive gamble...but for your health it might be worth it for you. I really wish you the best of luck!!!

Thats an excellent question in my opinion. I was on synthroid before my surgery which was on 11/5/12... Part of my discharge instructions was to stop taking that and my blood pressure meds...

I havent looked back since. My thyroid and blood pressure have been great and I am down 99.5lbs... So if I was to guess I would say you will have no troubles.

But everyone is different and your results might be different too...

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
