Do You Still Feel Hungry/have Cravings?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious about fats as the only "diet" I could successfully lose on was low carb. Atkins to be specific. His ideas on fats was way different then the norm. I am pre but I'm trying to get info. cheese, low fat or regular? Can half and half be tolerated? Does the pouch scream noooo at natural fats? My brain says low carb, not low fat, will this approach work with bypass?

I really don't worry about low fat except when I'm watching calories. Low carb is the direction I usually go but if Im wanting something to eat and pretty much have used my daily calories I will look for something low fat--maybe a small cheese stick etc. I'm about 8 weeks out.

A modified version of Atkins is what my surgeon likes.

I'm only 6 days out. I dont get hungry anymore. My dad made pancakes for the family on Saturday and I had no problem resisting them even as I watched them get made. I'm really amazed that it didn't make me salivate with hunger. I do get thirsty though and I used to be a big gulper. Drinking in sips is what I find hard.

If you're like me and like (or love) your pancakes, today my mom made me wheat pancakes with extra added Protein with sugar free Syrup. I got 10g of Protein plus the protein from the egg and milk used. it was yummmmm! Lol

& I feel you about the gulps. Sometimes if I forget and I gulp then my pouch gets mad and tightens up. Ugh!

I think hunger and cravings are some of my biggest problems. If RNY doesnt fix that, then there may be no point. So are you still hungry after surgery?

It's very common to have no hunger for a period of time following the surgery. In my case, it was about six weeks. Others have experienced it for much longer, some for a shorter period of time. Regardless, I think it's important to understand that getting hungry is a perfectly natural, perfectly healthy response of your body. Long term you will start experiencing hunger. Perhaps the most important thing to remember is - eat something! It is unlikely that you will be able to avoid getting hungry. What you want to avoid is ignoring it and then getting overly hungry - that's what can lead to overeating. Many, including myself, are told "never eat less than two hours apart". I expanded that rule to include - "never eat more than four hours apart". Specifically to avoid getting overly hungry. If it's been four hours, I eat something whether I'm "hungry" or not. It may only be a piece of fruit with a little cheese, but I eat something.

Hunger isn't something to be feared, it's something to be managed. You might find some other ideas you can use down the road in my post "Managing Hunger" at -

Are you serious? You can still have pancakes after Roux en Y gastric bypass? At what point can you do this? I was told things like that would be too hard to digest unless there's a special way to cook them. Please tell me if there is. I really want to know. Thanks. :D

Well, all we did was get the Aunt Jemima whole wheat blend. We added some unflavored Protein and then added the eggs and milk. And cooked it regular. It was as good as regular pancakes to me and it went down fine.

I'm 4 weeks post op btw.

:) hope it helps. But unfortunately what works for one person doesn't necessarily mean it'll work for the next. Hopefully it works for you too.

This takes me back to many conversations I've had with older folks who grew up on farms having bacon and eggs every day for Breakfast and fried chicken or chicken fried steak for dinner and are now pushing 90 and healthy as a horse....they ate fat but had minimum refined/processed carbs (fresh fruits and veggies yes, but no chips and candy and such). They were also extremely active...have to agree, I think there's some truth in what your doc is saying.

Atkins products (on line) has a baking, pancake mix that is designed for their low carb diet. It makes decent pancakes and you could use it tocoat fish and chicken, make baked items etc it's kind of pricey for the amount you get but if you are craving something baked???

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
