Today is a good day and glad to have more new people on board. I'm 82 lbs down after April 11 2012 surgery (bypass) nice people are noticing and commenting. Makes a person feel good. It is not easy every day but even going grocery shopping is different and so many cool new things to try and buy. Keep it interesting eat lots of nuts and put powder in your coffee, exercise when you don't feel like it and pretty soon you will want to go for a walk. Good luck and just do it, it's worth it. I breathe better I sleep better, I'm happier, this is a choice and opportunity, embrace it and don't think negative thoughts

Hi everyone' date='

Thanks for the Protein advice. My surgery is set for August 27th so I am reading up on what works/doesn't. I'm 42. I thought I wanted the band but my doctor convinced me that RNY was the way to go for my size and other health conditions. I am glad that is what I decided to go with. I started my 2 week Optifast diet today. So far it's okay but I'll see how I feel in a few days of being on this. I haven't found anything that I like yet. The chocolate premade shake had a metallic taste, I thought. Anyway, glad to be here and to see all the tips, and advice.[/quote']

I like the Atkins strawberry shakes. It has 15 grams of Protein. I have struggled with the protein. I've tried several shakes and powders and I really don't like them. I try to get most of my protein through food. If I'm not getting enough I will have a shake.< /p>

I was going for the sleeve but for insurance reasons picked the gastric bypass. There are pros and cons to both of them. With the amount of weight I have to lose the bypass will probaly be the better choice. I weigh 311. Highest weight 323. I want to get down to 150. Let me know how your sleeve goes. Good luck!

Hi everyone, I just made 39 on Aug 25, 2012 but, I'm preparing now for my 40th birthday. I started this journey in April of this year and I'm now waiting for my Dr. to submit the information to my insurance company. He told me to look forward to a late Oct. or November surgery date. I plan on using 2013 to get in shape and loose the weight that I need to in order to look amazing for my 40th birthday celebration. :D I'm super excited to get started on the losers bench.

I have read all you your stories over the past year and just wanted to thank you for all of your post, they really help me so much.

I am 42 and am looking at late Oct or early Nov too. I am so excited to be in the real prime of my life. The healthest and happiest. I can't wait to get out in the yard and throw the ball with my son. He has missed out on so much due to me being overweight. I have set him up to fail so far by living a unhealthy lifestyle. I plan on setting things right for him. I have already got started by exercising, eating better, and having a better outlook by being positive instead of negative all the time. The thing I haven't done is increase my couseling but I plan on talking to my counsler tommorow about doing more sessions. I am so excited about my future for once even though I didn't start til my 40's.

Congrats! I use pure Protein which is a whey concentrate, I get it at Walmart or Target for like 20 bucks. They say whey isolate is the best but since I tried these, they are the ones I like.

Chiming in just to say that only Whey Protein Isolate works for us after surgery, the other concentrates are pretty much useless

Below Is a post from DLCoggin that I found very useful, thanks again DL!

Whey was once considered a waste product from the process used for making cheese. It is a highly digestible, complete Protein made from cow's milk. Whey concentrate is about 80% protein with relatively low levels of fat, carbohydrates, and cholesterol (but still higher than whey isolate). So whey concentrate not only has a high percentage of protein but also provides healthy fats that boost the immune system. But if you're lactose intolerant, whey isolate may be easier to digest.

Whey isolate goes through an additional micro filtering process that is not used in producing whey concentrate. As a result, whey isolate is about 90% protein. Micro filtering removes the lactose and fat but also destroys many of the immune system boosting properties of whey. Whey isolate can also be significantly more expensive than concentrate because of the additional processing required.

The digestibility of various Proteins is published in the Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS). The PDCAAS has been adopted by the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. food and Drug Administration, and the World Health Organization. Proteins are ranked on a scale of 0 (least digestible) to 1 (most digestible). Whey, Soy, Milk, and Casein proteins all have a PDCAAS score of 1.0.

The bottom line is that with whey isolate you get more protein per gram (but not necessarily any better) and it may be better handled by those who are lactose intolerant. With whey concentrate you get slightly less protein per gram but added benefits from the higher fat content. As several folks have noted, the first test that any protein you're going to drink or eat has to pass is - taste. If you are not lactose intolerant and you find a protein that you like, the difference in protein content for whey isolate vs. whey concentrate vs. milk concentrate should likely be a minor consideration.

One word of caution - stay away from the protein "bullets" and "shots" that you will see in stores and read about online. If you look closely at their ingredient list, you will see that they are made with collagen protein. These products are attractive to bypass patients because they contain very large amounts of protein in very small volumes - usually 3 to 4 ounces. The problem is that collagen protein is an incomplete protein (meaning that it is missing one or more of the nine essential amino acids that your body requires and cannot manufacture) and more importantly, collagen has a PDCAAS digestibility score of 0.08. All the protein in the world is useless if your body cannot digest it.

Hi! I'm 41 and had my RNY May 21, 2008. I lost 123 lbs initially but HAD to put a little back on, wanted my scale to say a weight that was unhealthy considering the skin that is still hanging around. Right now I'm still at a 90 lb loss after having gained a few pounds I'd prefer to not have.

Anyway, my surgeon/support group is over 200 miles away and I'm hoping to make connections that help me get through the rough times...sometimes I forget I'm slim now! And maybe I can offer some words of wisdom also!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
