Hi! I'm 41 and had my RNY May 21' date=' 2008. I lost 123 lbs initially but HAD to put a little back on, wanted my scale to say a weight that was unhealthy considering the skin that is still hanging around. Right now I'm still at a 90 lb loss after having gained a few pounds I'd prefer to not have.

Anyway, my surgeon/support group is over 200 miles away and I'm hoping to make connections that help me get through the rough times...sometimes I forget I'm slim now! And maybe I can offer some words of wisdom also![/quote']

Welcome this is a great group.

I had RNY. It had taken me 5 years of research into weight-loss surgeries to decide what procedure would work best for me and to get my nerve up enough to go for the consultation. It also took me that long to prepare mentally for it.

One of the things that has surprised, and saddened, me is the number of people that seem to think that their surgery was a "fat cure." It's not a cure, it's a tool. And like any tool, if not used right, not only will it not do the job, it could even harm you.

I made sure that I was mentally ready for the lifestyle changes I would have to make to be successful. If I were to give "words of wisdom" to anyone still pre-surgery, make sure you are ready to change...not what you look like, how you live!

Everything is great for me! Down 91 lbs today (23 prior to surgery on 5/23/12) and I am really happy. If I never lose another pound I could be happy here forever. I went from a 48F bra to a 40DD, a size 26/28 that was getting tight to an XL on top and a 20 on bottom. This is the wildest ride ever and I am working really hard right now on fixing my head issues because I am pretty sure those dont magically disappear! Well, who am I kidding, I know they dont.

I have been really good. I have followed every single rule to the letter and my program is extremely strict - I only get Protein for the first 4 months so 2-3 oz of Protein 3 times a day and one Isopure shake (yep, that is it) so for the last four months I have been living on only a few things - meat/fish/chicken, high protein yogurt, eggs, cheese, and... well, that is pretty much it! It has been hard and I have not even licked anything I cant have - no sugar, no starchy carbs, no Beans, no veggies and no fruit. I just got to the point where I get to have 2-3 tablespoons of non starchy veggies with a meal, after I eat my protein.

However, the other day I was watching Dr. Oz and it was about binge eating. I could sure relate to the women on the show and in some small way was wishing I could eat that much and have all that crap. I could hardly believe what I was thinking in my head and I am not sure if that is due to the fact I am so limited on what I can eat or if I really need to do more work on my head issues or BOTH. Probably both but I have an appt. set up to see a therapist and this is a life long process for me I know. It wont magically fix itself or go away until I find out what got me there in the first place.

Thank goodness for support groups. these forums and good therapists! I love being in my 40's because I feel like I have all the other stuff figured out - this food beast though is my one hang up and I intend to figure it out or keep working on my head issues until I die! I dont know if I will ever get all the answers but I do know I am committed to loving myself, taking care of my body and finding a way to stay on track.

Hi, I am 46 and just had my first appt with surgeon today. How are the rest of you doing in your process? I agree, It is harder to loose weight after 40 because the hormones are wacky.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
