Hey- I am 62 and will have my sleeve surgery in February. I am having some illogical doubts lately. I think about the future and think well.....what if we have a severe depression, the economy goes south and Vitamins become hard to get- then what? Or I think what if food becomes scarce and can't get enough Protein? Mildly frightening survivalist stuff, which I've never been troubled by before! I think it is probably just the usual pre -surgery jitters manifesting themselves in unusual thoughts. Oh boy!

I am 63 and will be sleeved tomorrow morning. After all the hoops, I can't believe it's finally here! Feeling a bit of nerves but know it will be worth it. My starting weight was 237. Current weight 222. Have high blood pressure, fatty liver, type 2 diabetes. I am hopeful to eliminate all that. One step at a time. Tomorrow I will be on the losers bench!!

Sorry to jump in here but I was perusing the various logs, saw this and had to respond. I'm 61 and over on the RNY side so I do have something in common with ya'll. That said, I sometimes think about survivalist actions too and what would happen if I ran out of vitamins. Maybe I need to stock up on all of them just in case. I haven't acted on any of this but it's strange how my WLS has consumed my every thought and action. I hope you and everyone else here has great success in this journey we chose.

Had mine done this past Tuesday, one night in hospital. Doing so much better than I expected. Very mild nausea controlled by a low dose of Phenergan twice a day. I am taking a half dose of the pain medicine--liquid Hydrocodone--before bed. May even skip that tonight. A couple of doses of liquid Tylenol twice a day does the trick. Only really hurts (and it passes quickly) when I get in and out of bed because it stretches the area where the largest incision is. I went shopping at Walmart on the way home from the hospital while they filled my prescriptions, and went back today and had no trouble or pain at all walking around for about 15 minutes. No problem at all meeting the liquid requirements. Hope yours goes as smoothly.

Diane63--hope all goes well for you tomorrow. Be sure to have them show you how to get in and out of bed without straining your incisions--that was really the only pain I had. Good luck. C

LOL! Funny post!

If food becomes scarce you'll lose weight anyway.

Or you could kill and eat a fatter, slower person than yourself.

Hi, I'm 63 and was sleeved on Dec. 30, just in time for the new year. My recovery from day one was much easier than expected.

What I suggest for newbies is measure yourself, or get your SOB ( significant other being) to do it for you. At week 3 I hit a stall. And though my weight hasn't budged much, the inches are melting away. I put on a pair of pants the other day, but couldn't wear them because they looked like clown pants. I'm wearing pants I bought on sale, just incase I ever lost some weight, and they will soon be too big. I don't know why the scale doesn't reflect the loss of inches, but it should all work out eventually.

I'm still challenged by getting enough Water in, but I am filled with hope and promise. Wish I had done this sooner, but oh well.

Good Luck and stay on your path.

Paula

I am 68 and was sleeved on Sept. 9, 2014. I have lost 60 lbs. so far. I am in a stall at present, but am hopeful that things will work out. I feel tired sometimes, but all in all, my knees feel a LOT better and I am hopeful for the future. Hypertension is a lot lower, too. sleep apnea is being taken care of by my CPAP machine. I am still glad I got the sleeve and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. I have been overweight for a long time and am so grateful that we have the sleeve as a helpful aid to improving our health. Good luck everybody and hang in there!

Cococat: It encourages me that you wrote that your knees are better. I just had surgery two weeks ago, and have to stay off anti-inflammatory meds for another month. My knees are hurting much more than the surgery did. One of the main reasons I had the sleeve surgery was I need to have my knees replaced, and it would be too risky with my obesity and related problems. I am having to use a walker now, until I can get back on the meds. Thank you for your post. I'm sure you will get past the stall you are in and will reach your goal.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
