Pre-surgery weight loss struggle

Recommended Posts

I have 2 weeks until my pre-op appointment and my surgeon says that I need to have lost 10 lbs. I really struggle losing weight, hence why I am having surgery. Last year I lost about 30 lbs by taking a prescription appitite suppresant, injections and a low carb diet over 5 months. I have been eating no/low carb for 2 weeks and haven't lost any weight. I am so frustrated with this requirement. The nurse told me that he would not do the surgery if I haven't lost 10 lbs by the surgery date. I do have 2 weeks after the appointment until my surgery. But this is adding to my stress level as my mom is coming for the surgery and I have already asked for the time off of work.

I am considering going on the liquid diet now in hopes that I can lose the 10 lbs. Can I survive for 4 weeks on it?

Has anyone else struggled with the pre-surgery weight loss requirement?

It has been a challenge for me also. I think I would rather have a liquid diet than a no/low carb diet (I am on that one too). I have been eating only baked fish/broccoli and baked chicken/zucchini for the last three days and 2 boiled eggs for Breakfast. With exercise I have lost 5 pounds. Hope this helps.

Are you being really honest with yourself about what you are eating? Are you tracking it? Are you getting in lots of Water? The likelihood of not losing weight on the type of diet is really low.

4 weeks of liquid is a lot and I would not personally recommend it. I have done it for 2 and it has been killer. Maybe you should share your struggles with your doctors office and ask for their help.

I know that the 10 lbs is often an insurance requirement versus the doctor just being "mean". My surgeon has rarely, but has, put people on a pre-op liquid diet. But then it's 2 weeks liquids before and then 2 weeks liquids after, which is a LONG time without chewing.

If you drink Water, and track and weigh your portions, you will probably lose some weight. I would definitely ask for the help. My doctor gave me their 1500 calorie diet and I did it and was successful. A friend was not as successful, and they moved her to 1200 calorie. Then she and I ate together and we learned (by my observing) that she was "guestimating" way off on her portion sizes. She started using the food scale and lost the weight.

Also, watch the fruit - the carbs in fruit will kill you, even if you think they're "healthy" carbs.

I wish you well, and agree - if it was easy to lose weight we wouldn't need surgery.

Call and talk to your doctor - not the nurse - the doctor. Tell him your concerns and point out that you have a history of slow weight loss. Maybe you can compromise with a promise to follow a strict but not impossible diet, drink lot's of Water, etc.

Just to be safe amp up your Water, sleep and exercze.

This is just a sugestion, and it is easier typed than done, probably. See if you can't back off worrying about it a bit. Stress can really hinder the weight loss process. I had a stomach tumor and while I did monitor all the sugested and or mandiory conditions with my doctor, I knew they HAD to operate on me, so I think, oddly enough, the lack of stress I had in meeting conditions made it a little easier. I met all my conditions, because I was really worried about what else I could be facing and needed the surgery to go as smoothly as possible, so there was still stress, just not from that angle. There was a lot of stress, actually, from many angles, butt he diet edge was removed, and I think made it easier to follow.

Sorry typing fast at work, I hope that made at least a little bit of sense :P

Thanks. Unfortunately I can't exercise much as I have a injured knee from college sports.

I do need to go back to logging my food, just to be sure I am not consuming more calories than I think. Nutritionist gave me a goal of 1700 calories.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
