Anyone else out there had a screwed up period after surgery??? I had gotten my period day off surgery (7/19) and it was fine. Now I'm going on two weeks with this current one and I'm on the pill. I'm getting really annoyed by it. I'm tired all the time and not really wanting anything to eat (healthy at least) I go for my month post op checkup on Monday. Hopefully my surgeon can shed some light on my current issue. But knowing my body it will probably be over by then.

My surgeon made me stop my birth control as the risks of clots are higher when you are on it... I'm on the depo shot( which I love)

I have only spotted here and there since I stopped

She also told me I can resume 3 months post op.

I know your body goes through hormonal changes during surgery and its normal to be off but maybe the added hormone is making it worse?

Maybe check with the dr you normally go to for birth control and ask them if you should continue to take it or stop for a while...

When I started my supervised weight loss my periods were SOOO crazy one lasted 2 weeks the next one only 3 days. Just hope this goes back to normal (or as close to normal) soon. I'm going to ask my surgeon on Monday and then call my GYN.

Hi Rayna. I too have PCOS and have never in my life ever had regular periods. I am now 7months post op and down 117 lbs. I know am so regular it's nuts. Every 28 days. I know how hard it is when you want to conceive. I had many issues. I hope you become as regular as me and are able to have the baby of your dreams.

I also have PCOS. I am infertile due to this and it is a huge part of my decision for the sleeve. Did you go off birth control? I am worried about how it will effect my weight loss. I want to get pregnant really bad (obviously waiting until it is safe). How have you done with it?

Hi, I have been off the pill for approximately 9 years and do not use any birth control as such except hubby uses condoms, if you can call that birth control?

I don't believe it should affect your weight loss if you go off but remember it will take time to get out your system. With the sleeve, and losing weight, your body will adjust and because of the high level if Proteins you probably will become more fertile.

I recommend following your surgeons recommendations. Mine told me I should not fall pregnant for at least a year to get the best outcome from my sleeve... Hard but we are doing as told .... 8 months to go lol

Best of luck !

I also have severe PCOS with irregular to non existing cycles my entire life.... Sleeved 8/13/13 and hoping to start cycling normally and increasing chances of fertility!

So glad I don't have to suffer with periods anymore. I'm 46, on bcp's, and I think I'm heading into peri menopause. Can't tell with my hormones cuz I'm on bcp's. I have about a 1 day light period every 4-6 mths. No pain with it at all.

I used to be regular 26 days, bleed for 6 days (heavily at times) and have severe cramps for 3-4 days. Thank God that time of my life is over.

I don't envy u guys!

About six months ago, IT started, the perimeopause! I am not on bcp's and have always had regular and easy periods(4-5 days). Then all of a sudden, no period. This went on for 3 months, so I made an appt. with my ob/gyn and she confirmed it. Perimenopause, the beginning of the end. She told me I would likely have a period after skipping 3 or 4 and that it would probably be a mammoth. Well, I did have my period but it only lasted for a day and that was it. Since then I've had one more and it was the same, one day and that was it. I am 45 and would actually be thrilled if I never had another one, but I am pre sleeve and really worried that after my surgery when I start really losing a lot of weight , that the release of hormones in all that stored fat, I'm going to start having periods left and right. I guess there is no way to know until I actually go through it, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that things stay the way they are. I have never had a heavy period and I'm afraid if I do, I may freak out and run to the hospital thinking that I'm bleeding to death. LOL

This makes me wonder if mine are going to be like that. This last time it lasted 3.5 weeks. Not happy about it. It's ended just in time for my sugar pills to start. Lets see if I get it again. I have to go to my gyn. I told them about my two week one 4 months ago (I had my yearly in July before surgery) and he didn't seem worried. So when this past one wouldn't end I thought nothing of it. I guess I'll see what the next one is like.

I had surgery last year, not WLS, and had an irregular period afterwards. I have never been on birth control. But started taking a pill ten days before my period was suppose to start. It helped regulate my period again. Worked with my GYN to figure out what worked best for me.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
