Complex carb ideas

I really enjoy eating steel cut its from trader joes mixed with my Protein Powder. It is a good injection of Fiber and slow burning carbs to my diet to fuel both my day and workouts. The flavor and sweetness comes from the flavor of your Protein powder. For example, my protein powder is Cookies and cream, so I get a yummy cookies flavored oatmeal.

You can add as much protein as you desire. I try and add as close to 40 g as possible in order to maximize the amount of protein my body will recess in a 2-3 hour window. I am not concerned about calories though this is probably a 500 calorie meal. Eating it before a workout really helps. My calories tend to be around 2000 per day and yet my weight fluctuates between 175 and 178 - a few lbs below my goal weight). Again, I only have a very general idea of caloric count because instead I just try and focus on maximizing protein and eating good carbs / fats.

I am not a chef nor a cook so preparation needs to be easy and something I can handle alone without a lot of time or fuss. My wife is the master chef, but meals like these are generally my responsibility to make. I like the oats idea because it is so easy to make and can be prepared in a few minutes, yet energy gained is substantial.

Another one that has helped me is apple slices,almond butter and chicken skewer. Again a really good set of the macros. A little lower on the protein though and apples burn up a little too fast during an intense workout. This would probably be my second best option.

And those are currently my only two good complex carb / protein options. Lol. I need more options that hit fairly low on the glycemic index yet also pack a good solid protein punch.

What are some other easy to make meals like this that I can eat either first thing in the morning for a 9 am workout or mid afternoon for a 4 pm workout? I take no prisoners during my workout so the more good clean energy that can come from these meals, the better. :)

I used to make this every weekend for the week for us. It's old-fashioned oatmeal (not quick cooking, not steel-cut, but in between for level of processing), with greek yogurt and fruit. High in Protein, complex carbs and no cook. Woo hoo!

Basic recipe at our house for each serving was is 1/2 c oatmeal, 1/2 c greek yogurt, 1/2 c of soy/almond/regular Milk, honey or stevia to taste, 1/4 c either blueberries, or raspberries. Don't use bananas which brown. Multiply times days you want to have this.

Mix together in a bowl, put into 2 c mason jars so it can expand. The oats soak up all the yogurt and liquid. Leave in refrigerator at least overnight. Does well up to 5 days for sure. Enjoy!

My 13-year old was in charge of making it, so talk about easy.

I love playing video/computer games :) I used to be statgamer on several other sites because I am a statistician/scientist by trade but we also play a LOT of computer games at my house. What can I say, we're geeks and nerds and okay with it.

My wife and I are too! I am a mathematician by collegiate study and computer software engineer by profession. My wife and I are gamers, but sadly, do not have enough time to game as much as we would like. We are also big nerds when it comes to movies and TV shows. In fact, we have this tavern we like to go to up in Everett Washington called AFK. It is a total geek tavern where people go and play board games computer games with friends while drinking alcohol. Dangerous combination, I know!

I am self training at home for an eventual transition from enterprise software development in the financial industry ( 16 years of professional experience, 15 years of amateur programming experience before that) to game development on the iPad. I have the passion (always wanted to get into the video game industry as a software developer), the books and just need to find the time to study and learn about how to make good games ( do not think I would be going back to school for this like Full Sail or something related, but who knows). No need to spend time on making crappy games. :) Dream is to someday make a best selling game and run my own successful company ( kind of like story of mind craft creator).

After that, maybe in 20 years, my dream is to retire as a violin maker ( been fiddling around since 5th grade and am 37 now). I have always been fascinated about the craft and the physics behind the production of master level violin sound ( also studied computer music and wrote a thesis on the mathematical modeling of the sound from a violin using very advanced mathematics to model the physical characteristics and movements of the vibration of wood based upon type of word, varnish and even wood worms that chewed into venetian wood during the golden period of violin making, vibrations of string based upon certain bowing style - my master piece achievement based on innovative research). I would like to apply my research of violin sound to the creation of master violins later on in life.

But I digress...

I am such a shameless hijacker, especially on my own threads!! :)

I'm not surprised at the math and music combo. I'm sure you've read all there is on the best music being able to be broken down into mathematical progressions, chopin-listening in infants enhancing mathematical abilities, etc. I promise I will be amongst the first buyers of your game (unless it's like, $500 or something.)

BUT to get your own thread back to normal, here's another recipe I'd like to suggest.

Brown rice

Ground beef

Mixed, non-starchy vegetables

Fresh garlic and ginger if i want for health reasons

Always turmeric to reduce inflammation 1-2 tsps

Salt

chicken broth (2 c's broth for 1 c brown rice if making in a rice cooker/pressure cooker).

This is my basic recipe and then I doctor it up with taco seasoning, indian biryani seasoning, whatever is around seasoning. and this could be done at rice setting or pressure cooker setting for 6 minutes. Advantage of pressure cooker is lazy person like me doesn't even bother browning the meat first.

Silly question, but do you think switching out the beef for ground turkey, lamb, buffalo, boar or chicken would matter? I like to lean out the Protein a little and get a little exotic, if possible. Otherwise, the recipe sounds very tasty and easy to make!

I think it would work fine with lamb (even better actually) because it has some fat in it. If you do really lean meet and don't mind a little Paleo-friendly fat, consider adding 1-2 tsps of either ghee or coconut oil to the mix so the rice doesn't stick to itself. Both will lend different but equally nice taste nuances.

Oh yah I'm a big fan of the "dump in a pressure cooker and" types of recipes

Here's another fav standby and pre-op, we had this at least once a week for dinner with nothing else.

Veg of choice amongst green Beans, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, Swiss chard. (Other firm veggies will work but these I know work). Chop into slightly larger than usual sizes so they don't turn to mush.

-half a sliced onion

-3-4 low fat sausages (chicken, buffalo whatever you want)

-Paul Prudhomme type of mixed seasoning of choice

1/4 cup Water so you can enjoy the nutritious pot liquor

Drop of Tabasco to taste when you put it in your bowl.

Dump into pressure cooker. 4 mins for crisp veggies, 6 mins for soft veggies and falling-apart sausage. Esp good for casing sausage that can be tough because the heat "melts" it.

Not to get between you two, but you both have some awesome ideas. I can't wait to actually get to eat. I think the oatmeal in a jar will be the first thing I try.

I can't wait to eat either! In the meantime I am thinking of recipes and feeding others.

Bad joke but if you have what I call "guy humor" which I do, you will appreciate this (additional thread hijack) joke.

Comedian said that when it gets late at night at the bar, and he's drunk, he's got two choices. Go home with the fat lady, or try to drive drunk and go to jail. He always picks the fat lady, because he knows that at least at her house, the food is good :D

That's us. The food is good at our house because my husband and I both love to cook and feed people.

Love to eat bison (buffalo)!! And it's a good lean alternative to beef. Or the hybrid "beef-alo". :) Hard to find them where I live though.....only 2 places here within a 20 mile radius that has it. :wacko:

There is this fairly new burger joint near where I live that sells buffalo, bison and boar burgers. When we go there, I order one in a lettuce wrap without fries and wilt some of the toppings ( like fried onion strings, etc). Customization is where it is all at when eating out!

Well, since no one else has posted, I have one more that I loved pre-surgery. You can't taste the tofu. Recipe linked below, but I do add a jalapeño for they bite I love.

That looks good, but need to up the Protein. Perhaps some plain isolate protein can be mixed in or chunks of sliced low fat ham.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
