My go to meal is soup...

The first time I went out to dinner after being sleeved I was on mushies and we were meeting friends at a pizzaria. I ordered a calzone, and only ate some of the center cheese, it was full fat cheese, but I only had a few bites. It wasn't a problem at all and I took the rest home. Since then I've gone out a bunch of times. If I'm in a position to take home leftovers I'll order from the regular menu, typically broiled or grilled seafood or chicken. If not, I'll get something off the appetizer menu or a grilled chicken salad or shrimp cocktail and eat what I can. I have not found a situation where I couldn't find something on the menu.

My wife and I went out to dinner last night for our 23rd wedding anniversary to her favorite steakhouse. I ordered a 6oz fillet with sauteed mushrooms and onions. Unfortunately, they brought out a cup of this ridiculous tortilla soup so I knocked that out. I had like a pinch of bread, a bite of her loaded baked potato, and only had room for two small slices of my steak! So I have about 2 days of leftovers which is cool.

We eat out but not as much as we used to. I always bring leftovers home and we try not to let those go to waste. I get a minimum of two more meals out of what I bring home. I try to avoid Pasta, breads, and definitely not having Desserts.

as many other sleevers i used to go out ALOT with DH/friends

"they" say we are supposed to says lots of money - since we don't go out to eat much

of course many/most of us spend that extra money on clothes

back to your question............

i didn't go out to eat for a few about 2 months PO

didn't want to "suffer" being around all that food

as time passed - i started going out

i have a very little - and will take the rest home for another meal/or two

My husband and I go out quite often lately as we seem to have very little time to shop/cook this summer.

I can always find something on the menu and when I place my order with the wait person I ask them to bring a "to go" container out with the food. I then immediately pack about 3/4 of the meal in the container and put in on the seat/bench closest to me.

This way I get to "clean my plate"; not be tempted to overeat, and I don't get asked by the waiter/waitress "is everything okay"? when they see I've hardly touched my meal. And of course, as most people have stated......at least 2 meals for leftovers!

Sometimes if I'm eating something my husband would also like, I give him most of my meal and we don't take anything home. But he's also trying to lose weight (without the sleeve), so that doesn't really help him reach his goals!

I have been out several times and always found something I could eat and concentrate on Protein. I will split a meal with my husband sometimes or order an appetizer. I don't hesitate to ask for something to be cooked differently and let them know I have had WLS as the reason. I have always found that the restaurant staff are accommodating. I have even asked them to strain soup for me (back when I was on liquids). I track everything too so I know what the protein and carb levels are.

I am going to Hawaii Saturday for a week and will be loading up the protein with fresh fish. Nope, no problem with restaurants at all.

My husband and I have gone out several times since I was sleeved. Typically I get a side salad with dressing on the side. My husband will get a meal and share the protein part of his meal with me. I find this works really well as I am not great with left overs.

My first time out with my friends post-op I told them, look I can't eat alot so be ready to be amazed. They were and no one made me feel bad about it.

When we go out, I get Soup, seafood, or an appetizer. I never finish my food so once I'm done I just chat while others finish eating. My friends and family are loving that I can't finish my food because they know they get my leftovers. They literally sit and watch me eat so they can get dibs once I'm done.

The only thing that has been an adjustment has been not getting a drink of any kind. Knowing myself if I order a drink I'll want to drink and eat too close together. So I constantly remind myself not to order one...once I get past that, I'll be golden.

I worried about this so much before my surgery, because we are very social. ,I didn't eat out much at first because it just wasn't much fun. But by the 3 month point we were eating out all the time again. I usually get what I want and have lots of leftovers, which I feel no guilt about throwing out if I don't get to it all. Often if we go to a place that has add-ons (e,g,, crab legs for $10 with an entree, or grilled shrimp). I'll get that with a side of veggies or baked potato. That usually works out well for me, although I still only eat about 2 bites of potato. Avoid bread, rice and pasta. They will swell in your stomach and hurt. Honestly, I don't left out at all. If people get an appetizer, I eat one or two tiny bites. Never dessert anymore. No room! The only thing I really miss is a big salad.

I order a single entrée, no sides, or I pick at my husbands or daughters plate. Today we went to Cracker Barrel, I had 1/4 of a piece of hubby's fish, and ordered a side of pinto beans. My lunch was 100% protein, filling and only cost less than $3. Sometimes I ask for a salad, and request the grilled chicken, and asked for about 1/4 of the lettuce that should go on it. That way I get the chicken, cheese, and tomatoes, cucumbers and dressing. Or like someone else said, I do a shrimp or lobster add on. I'm in Florida, so fresh seafood is available everywhere. Leftovers are harder for me, since I don't think seafood reheats well. My favorite place to eat is Chipotle, I get a single soft taco, and just ask them to make it without the shell, they put all of the good stuff on a sheet of foil, and I eat it like a burrito bowl.

We go out to eat waaaay too much, I'm sure of it. The first time we went, we were in Dallas, killing time before heading home after spending two weeks for my 1st and 2nd checkup. We went to El Fenix and i ordered the tortilla soup, I asked for extra broth, less 'stuff'. I didn't NEED to explain, but told our girl that I'd had surgery and didn't want to 'eat' much. It was heavenly.....I only sipped the broth and only about an eighth of a cup, but it was great!! Now days, we share or I order ala carte. If I WANT to have left overs for lunch or dinner a day or two later, I'll get my own entree. Otherwise, it is NOT a big deal. So many people share today, and nobody really pay attention to what other folks are eating....except WLS patients, it seems we tend to look at people's plates at near by tables and think OMG, I really did use to eat that much!!!! Go and enjoy, it's not hard at all.

Check with your surgeon's team, there are many different approaches. I'm not allowed alcohol until I'm off soft foods and on to "real" foods, which for me is 6 months post-op. Even then it is discouraged. But I know other people's surgeons allow alcohol much earlier. Your surgeon should have a detailed plan for you though.
