the worst thing about the sleeve so far...

Recommended Posts

I had my VSG done on 5/22, and so far the worst thing about my recovery has been the disappointment of eating. When I start to get hungry, I go back to my old habit of mentally making a list of all the things that sound delicious and crossing them off one by one until I come up with the one food I absolutely must have. Every time, without fail, I will gleefully eat that food and end up disappointed. My tummy starts up it's gurgling symphony and usually I feel a little sick or bloated. I think to myself, "Hmm, well that sort of sucked."

The good thing about this is that hopefully it'll break my habit of looking forward to eating like it's some sort of treat or chance to indulge. Now I need to learn to see eating as a way to fuel my body with the most efficient food that won't make me feel sick. I'm sure someday eating will be somewhat more enjoyable, but for now...it's a generally unpleasant task that just has to be done.

Stay strong and stay focused and you will do just fine. It is kind of like when I quit chewing tobacco (I know gross habit) several years ago. I went without for a little while but then started having cravings and thought, well maybe just a small one. Well a small one built back up to a bigger chew and more often. Just have to stay focused and fight the craving. I did and have not had a chew of tobacco in about 7 years. Now I am ready for this challange. You will do great!

Every time I add a new food, it seems like I get sick of it after having it once. The food is no longer appealing. It's so weird.

I am amazed at how fast some you guys progress to real food. My surgery was 5/29 and I am still on whole liquids. My tummy makes the funniest noises when sip my Soup and my drink and I think the person next to me can hear it, which they probably do. I don't really have any cravings at all and must remind myself... Drink your shake.... drink your Water etc. Hopefully those horrible food cravings will never return since I am so happy with my progress.

I mostly stick to full liquids, because they go down the best. I can eat soft foods, but since it's generally unpleasant I'd rather have liquids! haha

One thing I've had to do...that I think generally ALL of us have to do is quit looking at food as a celebration or something that makes you happy, or how to derive as much pleasure from each experience as possible. Instead, look at it as something you have to do to stay alive and make your body healthy. That said-- I have a HECK of a time seeing it that way. We have to stop "thinking" about food.

Remember the cardiologists diet: "IF IT TASTES GOOD- SPIT IT OUT!"

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Remember you now eat to live, not live to eat. I have had the same experience, and at 5 weeks out somethings are great one day and not so much another. It's a learning process that's for sure.

I used to be a really big Peanut Butter fanatic. I'd easily eat 3-4 tbsp's right off the spoon in one sitting. It was getting to be a real problem...

Then one day I came down with a stomach bug, and I had eaten Peanut Butter that day. I puked up tons of peanut butter. After that experience, I no longer crave peanut butter or even touch it.

I think I'm having similar experiences with food and the sleeve. If I eat something and my tummy disagrees, I develop an aversion to it. Since most things don't sit terribly comfortably with me right now, I'm kind of developing an aversion to everything. The only thing I seem to be able to eat consistently is cottage cheese, and I'm even getting a little tired of that. I have these little plastic containers that I use, and I measure out 1/4 cup when I eat. That way I can prevent myself from overeating which I'll do if I put it in a "regular" bowl...even still, I have a hard time telling myself not to take that one extra bite. There is such a fine line between "comfortable" and "barfing in the toilet" for me with my sleeve.

I couldnt agree with you more. It seems like everything I eat does not agree with me or my taste buds. I'm having the hardest time finding food to eat. Prior to getting sleeve the only meat that I ate was poultry and limited seafood however that does even agree with me.

I'm nausiated on and off throughout the day. The only joy I have is the taste of strawberries and cucumbers in my Water which I lace with lemon or either lime. (YUMMY)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
