10 days post-op and Im hungry!

Hey guys this is my first post!

I am 10 days post-op surgery already down 20IBS :D . But the dilemma is I'm hungry all them time. All I can think about is food. Wendy's, pizza Hunt, Chick Fa La, etc. I think I'm starting to get depressed, I almost cried today! I have already cheated on my two week liquid diet, first with a couple teaspoons of tuna fish,oatmeal,mash potatoes, and spinach, within the last too days all which I tolerated very well (but the spinach was kinda rough going down). It's like I want to Celebrate my weight loose but do I have to miserable while loosing weight? Has anyone started to regret their decision in the beginning? I keep telling myself be patience this is only the beginning but it SOOO HARD! I have already missed out on 2 BBQ and a Girlfriends night at the bar because I didn't want to be around the food or the drinking knowing I couldn't have any. When I express my feelings to my friends and family they just laugh it off but I'm really serious

Someone Please give me so world of encouragement, and tips on things I can do or maybe even eat to stop be so hungry.

P.S. It's not a mind thing I truly have hungry pains, nurse says it normal because I not in-taking enough Protein daily, but I still haven't found anything that tastes good or my stomach could tolerate.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember to endorse yourself for your accomplishment thus far. You have A LOT of physical changes and emotional changes. Acknowledge them as they are coming up and accept them. "This too shall pass". Distract yourself with recipes or positive activities. Cover your basis by following your diet plan to a T. And soon the desires will subside as you change your lifestyle daily.

Were you ready to do this when you had the surgery or did someone talk you into it? My advice would be to see someone that you can talk to about your feelings of depression and why you still feel like eating all of the time. How did you feel before the surgery? Did you have health issues? Really just search your soul and get some help. Good luck!

I could only say that I thought I was as ready as I was going get I spent a year doing pre-op appointments and dieting. No one talk me into surgery this was my own decision if anything I was being talked out of it. I have no major health issues but im 24 with my highest weight being 314 and pre hypertensive. I don't think I need and physiological help. I think I need a few days maybe weeks to adjust. I been eating when, what, and how much food I want for as long as I could remember for me to have to stop so drastically I guess I was ready for that part but thanks for all you good wishes

First, it sounds like you are having head hunger. That takes a lot of work to get through but it is worth it. If your stomach is growling right now it is probably not real hunger. It is healing and you may be thirsty or there may be excess acid. That can mimic hunger and you can take a PPI to help. Talk with your doctor.

Second, cheating on your post-op diet could kill you. The purpose of this phase of the diet is to let your stomach heal. This isn't a joke. A leak could kill you. Vomiting could cause a leak this early out, or over-filling your sleeve. If you get a complication, will that spoonful of spinach be worth having to go through another surgery?

I'm 18 days post op and I felt the same why during the first week or so. If you look on this forum, you will find that It's really normal. No matter how much you research and prepare yourself, you don't really know what it's like until you experience it. This is an emotional process as much as a physicall one. I'm able to eat soft foods now and it's getting better every day. I go to a counselor and talk through my feelings which really helps. I'm really craving the foods I can't have (head hunger). I also get get real hunger. This will pass and in a few weeks/months, this will all be behind you.

I know exactly how you feel. There's no "psychological" about it. I have felt like I am starving for the past 13 days. I have been following the food plan rigidly. I was "promoted" to soft foods starting yesterday. Nine days after surgery, I was so hungry I had to get up from bed at 11:00pm to eat a half cup of plain, fat free yogurt. I was so hungry, I literally could not sleep. The yogurt helped.

I think it was a little better today.

Being so hungry has been the big disappointment post surgery because I know that so many folks have no hunger at all for some time.

My plan is to be very careful in following the proper diet in hopes that things will get better. I have 2 sources for protein-only (no fat, no carb) at around 100 - 120 calories, and I am being very careful to imbibe those, along with three small meals of around 300 calories each.

Make sure you are getting all your fluids in, as dehtdration can mimic hunger. Also, does your doc have you on a ppi? In my reading, I have discovered that acid can mimic hunger, and that for some, getting on a ppi can really help.

Thanks everyone I'm better now 3 weeks post op at this point still adjusting to my new way of eating but feeling much better. I'm on soft foods now which is good but I find myself eating the same thing fish and mashed potatoes. My NUT basically told me at this point I can have anything that isn't crunchy but the things I want I shouldn't have so I stick to the basics. I've tried bread and did pretty well. Went out to Eat for the first time and I think it was a waste of money lol. I didn't even finish half the food.< /p>

Most likely its healing or you're not getting your Water in. Make sure you're pushing that water.

How well do I understand the deprived feelings! I am two weeks out from surgery. I am addicted to food this is a fact. Stay away from temptation, run away from others when they stuff themselves. If food smells good when you are around,get out of there. I am getting stronger as I see my progress. You will too. You didnt make a bad decision getting surgery you made a life changing great decision. This will be great!! We are all in this together and we will win!! HANG in there.

I just read the post you made on June 8th regarding hunger. I am 8 days out and feel hungry a lot of the time. I'm doing a pretty decent job getting my Proteins and my fluids in. I was just wondering if you are feeling satisfied now that more time has past. And if you are not feeling hungry all the time, how long did it take to get to that point. Appreciate any input.

I'm feeling much better now that I'm almost 5 weeks out. I'm now on my last week on soft foods then its back to mainly anything I want to eat. I basically felt hungry throughout my whole liquid stage the nurse told me it was because I wasn't getting enough Protein. I still get hungry now and sometimes I hate to eat still adjusting to the slow eating and the portion size. Ordering out or going to restaurants is a waste of money now because u never finish your food. I don't regret my decision but it is a learning process and a lot more different then what I thought. Stick in there it will get better. Hope I helped.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
