Fear of the gym.....

Recommended Posts

So I am just getting started, hoping for an August surgery date. I have all if my surgeon's pre-requisites scheduled. I have a lot to lose. I weighed my highest ever yesterday at the surgeons office. 406.

I have never been one for exercise. I don't really like outdoorsy stuff and the skinny people at the gym intimidate me. I thought it was in my head until someone that I work with posted on Facebook that looking at all the fatties in the gym made her sick to her stomach and they should have their own gym. Then I have heard of gyms that won't let you work out on their equipment if you are too heavy.

I know that I need to exercise to be successful but this gym thing is stressing me out. :/.

Despite my size, I've been going to the gym off and on since 2005. I've been a member of three different gyms in that time. Not once, not one single solitary time has anyone ever harassed me about my weight. What has happened is I've had people tell me things like "you're doing great" or "keep up the good work".

When I joined the first gym, I asked if the equipment could handle my weight and I was told it could handle much more (as in > 500lbs) so don't fret about that. What you might find is some machines won't be as comfortable to use as others. I can't stand stationary bicycles because I don't fit on them. Someday I will and I'll try again.

You don't have to join a gym to exercise. Walk at the park, get resistance bands and exercise at home. I'm like you, I am not going into a gym until I fit in with the "skinnies." My surgeon had me meet with an exercise guy and he gave me a resistance band and plenty of exercises to do at home. I am sure you can find stuff online too. The first step is to get off the couch and move. My "trainer" told me to start with 3 times a week for 20 minutes. Sheez, I can do that. You can too!

Don't fear it. My highest was 363 pounds. I too was scared to join the gym because of my weight and my shortness makes me look even more of a butterball. Anyways, I lost some weight on my pre-op diet, then when I had surgery on 1/30/13, I was 276. Well it took all this time to finally find some pants and shirts to fit comfortably, then the next hard step was signing up. It helped that an uncle went with me. The next hard step was showing up for my first workout. When I finally did earlier this month, it wasn't so bad. In fact, I love it! I can't believe I waited so long to do this! I could have been doing this along time ago! In just 3 weeks, I've got some definition in my arms and my legs feel stronger. Good luck to ya!

U dont have to join a gym, I found that working out at home was good enuf for me. I bought the biggest loser power walk dvd & when I was out I walked more or parked further from the door of places.

Once I got down to a more comfortable size , was able to move around more easily & had a lottt of energy I then joined a gym.. The ppl there were soo nice.. I hope u find what works for u! Good luck

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
