Post 2 weeks and paying the price

Recommended Posts

2 weeks after VSG. Week 1 went well, no real issues other than hard to swallow and take in enough H2O. Week 2 was hell. Nausea, vomiting,

Fever, shakes , high uncontrolled heart rate, . Had to go to ER, had infection and mildly dehydrated. Got 1 bag IV solution and liquid antibiotic. Started week three today eating soft food, have to eat really small portions.

Unforeseen side effects, highly increased sense of smell, and mouth tastes rotten within 2 hours of teeth brushing, and mouthwash. Dr says thats normal as toxins purge from body???

Anyway have lost 20lbs since may 14.

Anyone have similar issues?

Everything you just mentioned is pretty normal for most of us. It is your new normal for a bit. Just hang in there. It does get easier and better as time passes. Protein, Water, and walking are what you need to focus on for the first month...get through it & you will feel so much better!

Best of luck to you.

Spry mints are awesome. Made with Xylitol. Look into some. It helped me out immensely. I don't chew mints with aspertame in it. Kind of a lifesaver. The mint ones also help with that nausea feeling.

I am also about 2 weeks out (May 16) and today experienced 'foamies' for the first time. Absolute YUCK. I think I ate 2 bites too many, not long after that the pain in my chest started. I tried walking it off, but by the time I got back home I knew I was going to throw up. Oddly, it wasn't as bad as throwing up used to be pre-op. But I have been throwing up foam every 15-20 minutes for about 4 hours now. I'm starting to feel better, but I'm pretty worn out. Also feel incredibly thirsty, but I don't dare drink anything for fear of starting it up again!

Definitely not as bad as what you've gone through, but hopefully you won't have to add this to your experience. I hope you feel better soon!!

I had surgery on the 14th and still struggling with pain in my right side and NO energy! I can get past the bad taste in my mouth and the sensitivity to smell. I just want my energy back and want to be pain free! I'm so ready to go back to normal activities. I'm still off work....noway can I go back in this shape!

My energy came back slowly but quickly. I think it just takes our bodies a little while to get used to such a drastic reduction in fuel. I do notice that I still get tired sooner than I used to, and when I do, I'm done. No reserves to draw on, I have to stop whatever I'm doing and rest (sometimes even take a nap). Going back to work is going to be hard, but I'm looking at it like this is part of listening to my body more than I used to.

I have experimented with all types of Protein Drinks, muscle milk, Isopure, etc, and all turn my stomach or the volume to much to drink. I found the new wave Protein Shots, they come in a container much like a test tube. They have over 40 grams in less than 4 oz. I pour about 1 oz into a medicine cup and am able to slam in down and chase with some Water. Do this about 4 times during the day and you have most of your requirement for the day. Now I have energy that did not exist 1 week ago. It was a lifesaver for me.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
