Newbie here, how did you all pay for surgery? Finance?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering surgery with Dr. Ponce and was wondering how people pay for surgery? My friend went to Dr. Ponce and I think she got bank financing. What would be a good option for someone whose credit is not that great? I took a hit to my credit after being unemployed for over a year. I've been employed full time for 2 years now but I worry if I can qualify for financing on my own, I don't have a co-signer. In insight would be greatly helpful. Thank you!

I went through Medicard...very easy to get approved. My credit isn't that great either.

Have you tried asking for an uncollateralized personal loan from your bank already? I don't think your credit has to be perfect and it doesn't hurt to try.

I am doing half and half...half from savings, half from a personal bank loan.

Be weary of those medical financing companies...you will get a approved, and the rate will seem okay, but then they add on a fee of anywhere from $500 to $1,200.

Can you try to save for a few months so you don't finance as much? I mean if you are going to be able to make the payments, can't you also save the same amount up front and not have to finance so much?

Good luck!

I saved like crazy! No cable, no new clothes, no going out to eat, no gifts for people, no car... Now I'm saving like crazy for PLASTICS!

Also, I used the time I was saving to begin my journey... I lost 45 pounds between the day I decided to do the surgery and my surgery date and I addressed a lot of emotional issues that I had with food.

Dave Ramsey fan? ;) I don't have that kind of patience...but neither do I think it's a good idea for someone with bad credit to finance all of their surgery. But that's just my opinion...to each his own.

Is Medicard only available to Canada residents? I searched it and that's all I can find.

Google medical loans or something like that. Just read all the fine print before you sign. When I was still researching Drs I looked at 4 or 5 different loan places.

I ended up putting the whole shebang on a zero per cent credit card because I knew I can pay it off within 2 or 3 months once my I R S Checks roll in. (I have 3 years worth coming, Im a procrastinator).

Good Luck

I contemplated a few things.

My car is paid off... so the bank offered a loan using my car as collateral.

A low interest rate credit card.

Or... what I decided to do is refinance my house. Rates are so low right now that seemed like the best choice.

If all else fails,I read somewhere on here that One Main Financial (google them) offers unsecured loans.

Best of luck! :)

I will be using my tax refund, and I sold a car and our pop-up camper. I vote for no financing, sell stuff or save up. :)

I used my tsp (equivalent to 401k) for most of my surgery and financed the rest. Good luck

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
