Rush and University of Chicago are two different hospitals, but I think they are right by each other. There's that whole medical district where there's like 8 hospitals in one area - Rush is on Harrison, off of 290 at the Ashland/Paulina exit... I think your hospital is over there too, but I'm not sure.

I'm 32 - I did get the sleeve, just had surgery a week ago today, actually! I'm doing good... I'm still sore when I wake up in the morning, but as long as I get moving, it gets better. I stayed in the hospital for 2 days. Went in Thursday, went home Saturday. I did pack a bag, but I didn't use most of it. I slept a lot because of the anesthesia, and was too groggy when I was awake to do much - I brought my ipod, magazines, a book, crosswords - didn't use any of it! I did use my phone, tho, so bring a charger with you! For my bag, I didn't pack clothes (I just wore the clothes I came in when I went home), but I did bring some facial cleansing wipes (because bending is painful at first to wash your face), lip balm, deodorant, toothbrush/toothpaste, lotion, and a hair brush. I wished I had brought some petroleum jelly or carmex, because my usual lip balm didn't seem to last long because I was so dry...

The first few days home, I slept A LOT. I think your body heals when you sleep (at least that's my theory!). So I would definitely see if someone can take your kids off your hands for a few days. I don't have kids and I couldn't imagine having to take care of children right after that surgery. I barely was able to take care of my dogs! But every day does get better... I can move around a lot easier and I only take my pain meds once a day now. I'm actually gonna try not taking them tomorrow and see how I do! The pain meds make me sleepy, so it's hard to take them and still function.

I'm off work for another week. I wish I could afford to take more time off because I'm sure I'll be quite tired when I get back to working! I've gotten used to my afternoon naps! lol

It's cool to meet someone in the area! I wish you luck with the approval process, I know that being on the medical card they can take a little longer to approve, but it IS possible to get it done! :)

Good luck with your visit! Hope all is well and that traffic wasn't terrible!

You know, you're a mom - it seems to me that moms have special MOM powers, so maybe you will bounce back quicker simply because you're used to running after your kids? IDK - just trying to think positively for ya. :)

As far as your husband getting time off work - he could apply for FMLA. It guarantees time off for medical needs, either your own or for immediate family members. He would qualify for it since you're his wife and having major surgery. He should check with his HR department and find out what he has to do. Your surgeon can fill out the paperwork for him and then he doesn't have to worry about whether or not his boss will approve the time off!

Definitely take advantage of the rest in the hospital. It's hard sometimes with how often the nurses come in to check your vitals and stuff, but for the most part, they left me alone to sleep and tried their best not to disturb me.

Hi! I noticed that you had surgery with Dr. Ayloo. I saw her before going to Rush and I did NOT like her at all. Worst experience with a doctor ever in my life!

I'm hoping you had better care with her! :)

Thanks for the response! I has neck surgery C5c6 fusion in Novemebr 2012. I am just returning to work. The surgeon told me I had some lower back disc issues also but we will deal with them later. Now I have lower back, hip and extreme pain in my rig leg. I cannot sleep or walk without pain meds. I am back off work again! I looked so forward to exercising and toning up after this surgery. I feel depressed somewhat because I can't work out. My hip bone hurts so much! I will attempt to working my wii game. I became a vegetarian one year and six months ago( before the surgery). I lost 60 lbs in doing that! I wanted this surgery to assist me and working out to tone me....now I am stuck..in pain...no working out...but I am grateful that I had the surgery before this issue .

Hope to meet the chi town people in a support group or something.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
