Itemizing the surgery when filing taxes

Recommended Posts

Was anyone able to add all the costs of surgery while filing your tax returns in the states...even though the procedure was performed in Mexico?

I would like to know as well. Also wondering if you can claim Aflac. I have the hospital plan which pays you for your hospital stay but not sure if Mexico is covered or not.

You can but you have to have proof of medical necessity. That's what I understood anyway. I didn't claim mine but I did type in the numbers and nothing changed. It has to be more than 7.5% of your income I think.

It's 7.5 for those aged 65 and over and 10 for the rest of us

It's a % of your taxable income.

So if you made 100,000 but you're taxable is 95,000 then 10% is 9,500

Now if you have an HSA or other pre tax account to reimburse yourself you are further challenged

I included everything related to surgery on my schedule A last year...including travel expenses. But like jersrose said, I could only deduct the part that was over 10% of my adjusted gross income.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
