HELP! I have a BIG problem with snacking. What can I Do?

Recommended Posts

HELP!!! I am a huge closet snacker. I try to be very conscientious about buying and eating those candy bars and chips but its not working. Once I discovered they digest well I can't seem to stop eating them. I am so embarrassed, I want to call my Dr office for advice but I'm ashamed. I have a very stressful job that requires that I work long and strenuous hours. I know this is restricting my weight loss success but I can't get past those triggers. For awhile I would exercise to get passed those triggers but 2 weeks ago I re-injured my knee that has slowed me down again. What can I do? I need help! Please any and all comments are welcomed. Thanks

It's all in your head. Ask the Dr office about support groups. Maybe go back to whoever you went to for the pysch evaluation and start getting some help. There is no physical reason for you to be eating that way so to beat it you need to attack your mental issues with food. You aren't alone and there is help out there that will allow you to beat this. Stop feeling ashamed, take control and address the real issues.

Just stop snacking. LOL. I know its easier said than done. I used to be a big snacker too pre-surgery but post surgery I judge everything I put in my mouth on a scale of 'is it sleeve worthy or not'. If it doesnt have Protein or fruit or vegetable, it typically does not go in my mouth. When Im 'hormonal' and only chocolate will save someones life, my hubby makes me chocolate covered strawberries. That way I get a little chocolate and lots of fruit. Its a compromise. After all I went thru to get sleeved and how active Ive become and how much weight Ive lost so far, there is no way in heck Im going back to my old ways. I refuse to fail. Love yourself and kick those Snacks to the curb!!

hun, you can't see my face - but in the nicest way i'm saying "knock it off"!

don't buy junk!!!

i never have any junk in the house!!!

i don't want/need any temptation

this would trigger problems for me to no end - i can't go there!!!

I can see B) you are a smart kiddo - and you wisely made the decision to have WLS to improve your life

you can/will be successful - but you must get back to basics

start again with Protein shakes maybe for a bit

and stay on plan!!!! you have to!!!

don't give up, its never too late to start again

don't throw in the towel

drink your Water properly, chew thoroughly, eat slowly - you know the routine!!!!

i KNOW you can do this!!!! I just know it!!!

you were very brave and went through major surgery to loose weight and improve your health and life

you realized how necessary it was/is to loose weight!!! (no ticker  ) don't know how much you need to loose!

but whatever it is, apparently its bad enough that you realized you must do something to take the weight off!!!!

we all must work to be successful

the sleeve will help you loose weight, but you must work with the sleeve, and curb your eating

best of luck to you :)

I know just how you feel. I was gaining as well as snacking. I recentley started using my fitness pal.com and that has helped. Also i gave myself permission to eat Atkins Protein Bars when i want something sweet. I eat those in place of "real candy". At least i'm getting some Protein in when i have one, and some of them taste really good and that satisfies my sweet tooth. I'm losing again and confidence is up. Hang in there and never give up!!

I'm with Laura and grammy... You have to keep the junk out of the house. I was at my mom's house for an extended time last week and just being in her kitchen (always a source of very good, but very bad for you yummies) made me want Entemman's cakes. It was just sitting there, and BOOM.. it had power over me. Thankfully I got out of the kitchen without incident..

Recommit, get rid of all temptation and don't even go down those aisles in the store anymore. I'm allowed some Snacks, so I always have cheese sticks, fat free/sugar free pudding or single serve reduced fat Peanut Butter on hand.

You can do this! You didn't go through surgery to fall back into bad habits.

Good luck!

I'm with them...it HAS to stay out of the house or I WILL eat it! I bought doughnuts for the grandkids the other morning & literally pushed them out the door with the kids when their parents picked them up! It's still too early...I have NOT conquered those demons yet..so I run from them!

My surgeon said he would rather see me about something now than a year from now, feeling like I failed and having gained 50#. You aren't the first you won't be the last. We didn't get to the points we started at by consuming only carrots and celery. food addiction, call it what you need too. It's really and it's a battle. I'm only pre op and I am in my 4th month of 6 for my insurance requirements and haven't lost the FIVE required pounds. I am frustrated, irritated and embarrassed and the week before my doctors appointment my am out gets worse and I get stressed out. I haven't gained but its hard. Surgery is only a tool, it didn't rewire your brain. You made this decision for a reason. Write down those reasons and decide that it isn't worth it.

I feel you, I also snack way too much at times and not on healthy things. This is really hard but we can do it. Bad habbits are hard to break. Time and effort will get us to where we need to be :) Best wishes on your journey!

I am sorry you are going through this and I feel you need to find another vice for your stress. I am a huge stress binge eater. I can't have things in the house that I will eat till it is gone period. I just can't buy it and have it around. I would suggest if you like crunchy do cut up veggies, if you like sweet find a yogurt you like, Or a frozen yogurt

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
