1 more frustrated with cigna!

Recommended Posts

So my doctors office faxed in my stuff for pre approval about 2 weeks ago. I began calling Friday to see if they had approved it or not yet. They swore they hadn't received anything. Repeated that Monday, Tuesday, and today...still nothing. So I called the doctors office and they said they'd re-send, but call Cigna and get them to check the "fax cube." I did and guess what, it was there the whole time! They still say it'll be another 5+ business days before getting a response.

....and what upsets me is that someone drops the ball (the person who is getting PAID to take care of faxes), yet now YOU will have to wait an additional 5 business days due to THEIR employee who isn't doing their job. Big FAIL!

Then again, my way of looking at things is that everything happens for a reason, so just hang tight (unless you want to contact a supervisor of that dept). It's only 5 more days.

BTW, I just **LOVE** Atlanta!

I agree. I feel that everything happens for a reason too, but to have completed all of the requirements...just to have my paperwork sit unnoticed for 2 weeks is about enough to piss anyone off.

I've been in Atlanta for about 4.5 years. I can't say I love it here lol. In fact, I'm planning to get far away from here if all goes well the beginning of next year. I'm from North Carolina, but went to college in New York. I miss the north!

Yeah, that stinks. Thankfully its only a few more days though.

I'm from NY & wouldn't want to live there again. I go to Atlanta on vacation to visit my BFF & to attend concerts since I have a great contact at Philips Arena, so it's always a good time when I go there. That's probably why I love it there. I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years & **loved** it but you need lots of $$$$$ to have a decent life there when you start a family. Now I'm in a Detroit suburb & hate it here. Working on moving in 2 to 3 years.....heading somewhere with NO SNOW! :P

Good luck on your journey Will!

Thanks. I've thought about the west coast too...I did an internship going all over NorCal for 6 months. Ukiah. Sacramento. San Francisco. Santa Rosa. Gilroy. LOVED it!

How far along are you in the process?

I know that having the surgery won't be a magically thing and my life won't be instantly better, but for once I can imagine myself not taking a lesser job so I won't stand out, avoiding going to places because I'm not sure if I'll fit (comfortably), or even how much cheaper things will be once I'm smaller (smaller clothes, considering a smaller car, cheaper insurance premiums, spending less on food, etc.)

Good luck on the move down the road! I wouldn't mind going somewhere with snow lol

Today I call Cigna just to see if my approval was any farther along in the process. Nope! In fact the person couldn't find it...then I told her the person yesterday found it on the fax cube. After a while she found it and then told me I'd need to resubmit! She said on the paperwork, my ID# started off W, which it's supposed to be U. Can't someone #%*€¥!+ mark through it?!?!?

I called my doctors office back and the patient coordinator looked at my file and swears everything had my ID# starting off with U...so she's planning to have a nice talk with a Cigna supervisor. I already didn't like Cigna, but this process is making me HATE them.

Hi Will ... I know exactly how you are feeling with Cigna. It's been our insurance for nine years. Never had an issue. But it seems for WLS they can be real pains sometimes. After ALL my paperwork was submitted, they claimed two things were missing, which they weren't and they denied me after a week. Why couldn't they just call the hospital to refax the missing info? My insurance coordinator at the hospital resubmitted them and then I called everyday and kept being told that it was still awaiting review by the medical director. So as of yesterday morning - Friday, I still wasn't approved and my surgery is Monday!! I was really beginning to think this wouldn't happen for me. But my surgeon called Cigna herself and did peer to peer with the medical director and within an hour I got the call from my coordinator that I was approved!! Just keep on them. Call everyday and make sure you speak to your coordinator often. Wishing you the best of luck, and that your approval comes quickly!!

I hope and pray they don't deny me, but if they do...I'm ready to fight.

Thanks & good luck on your surgery! Let me know how it goes!

Update: I was denied last Wednesday for missing the supervised weightless by ONE day! I was able to see my dietician last Friday for another appointment and they resubmitted the same day.

All week I've been calling in to check the status and finally I'm approved!!! It's so true that waiting for the insurance approval is harder than the damn pre surgery requirements.

I'll be on the lovely liquids in about a week...but I've noticed that as more time passes, I don't really have a taste for a lot of the foods I once loved. Has anyone else noticed anything similar?

No, I don't have a date yet. Luckily since I work for a college, I'll be off in 2 weeks for the summer break. I'm not picky about a date...but it'd be nice to have it ASAP

When you say you missed it by one day do you mean your last vist to the PCP wasn't exactly a full month...I ask this because my appointment with my PCP for my final nut visit isn't exactly a month and maybe I should change my date so I don't run into this problem

My supervised weight loss was supervised by my NUT. My Cigna plan required 90 days of supervision counting day 1 with the NUT through the last appt. I had 89 (thanks February for being so short.) Just make sure you count the days.

Good luck! Even being denied wasn't so bad the first go around. I met with my NUT the next day...they faxed in the info and I got my approval less than a week later

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
