Change in plans...now going with Dr. Aceves

Recommended Posts

Today I decided that I am now going with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. I am still having my surgery on April 10th. I knew he cost more but I felt more comfortable with him. Can't wait soo excited and also thanks to Amanda Rae for all the insight.

Didn't travel to MX but did drop my first Doc. felt OK with him but his staff pulled some shenanigans that made me decide I did not want them handling my surgery.

It was the same for me NC... I'm having surgery on April 1st with Dr. Aceves and following Amanda's journey has made me feel even more confident with my decision. :)

I had surgery with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali on Dec 13th. I have no complaints. They were very kind and professional.

Pookeyism-same thing with me. I felt like every time I had a question I was bothering them and my gut said to go with another doctor.

I have heard many amazing things about Dr. Aceves and his team. Nina is amazing.

I had surgery with Dr Aceves on 8/31/12 and I highly recommend him and his team. Yes, his services do cost more than some other surgeons, but to me he was worth every penny. I went alone and didn't worry about a thing the whole time I was there.

I'm glad that sharing my experience is helping others find peace of mind. Dr. Aceves was not my original choice due to cost, but ultimately the best choice for me.

I changed because I was worried my heart would act up (ironic huh?) and my 1st choice/venue may not be equipped to handle it. I will never know how it would have ended up elsewhere but I do know it worked out well in Mexicali tho. It was getting anxiety thinking about it so I switched.

Once I made the switch I felt much more calm. Please know I'm not saying anything negative about my 1st choice at all. The reviews I've read are all consistently complementary. I just needed a bit more for my hand holding due to knowing my heart acts up from time to time.

If I had issues with my heart I probably would have made the exact same decision Amanda! As it stands though, I think the price difference was over 3000$, so I just put that straight into the BOOB fund, I'm going to need some boobs after all this weight loss! I was so embarassed at the gym yesterday, my trainer had me doing these superman things in front of a mirror and I was on all fours, and I could see down my shirt and my breasts were dangling like 6 inches even with a bra. Obviously I need a better bra :) But they're really not pretty :)

That's good to hear Amy. I'm going to see Dr. Aceves alone on April 1st. Your weight loss is amazing. When did you reach your goal? Any tips for success?

MzMeka,

I reached my original goal of 130 at about 5 months, I've slowly lost 8 pounds since then. I did exactly what Dr. Aceves said in his post-op rules. I paid a lot of $$$ for this sleeve and I didn't want to waste a minute or a penny of it. I consciously under-eat my sleeve. I have never once once tested it to see how much I can eat. Dr. A said eat 2 oz of Protein, I eat 2 oz. Why test it even with 3 oz? I eat 3 meals a day and an afternoon snack. I kept my calories in the 600 zone and now eat closer to 800.

I don't show my profile pic for privacy reasons, but I'd be happy to share my before/after pics with you through a PM.

Follow his rules and you will be a Dr. Aceves success story. :D

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
