Nutritionist setting unrealistic goal for me?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone!

I haven't formally introduced myself here. My name is Gabriela. I'm a 21 year old college student. I was approved a few weeks ago for surgery. I'm having surgery on Monday (12/17)! I'm really nervous, but working on research papers right up until the morning of surgery will hopefully keep me distracted.

Today I had my final meeting with my surgeon and nutritionist before surgery. I'm 5'6" and 271lbs. She said "By October, you'll be down to 150lbs, no problem!"

I asked her "Really? Doesn't that seem a little fast?" and she said no.

Maybe I'm just being pessimistic? But 120 pounds in 10 months seems really fast! And I've seen that not everyone loses weight so rapidly. I was thinking a year and a half to get to goal weight.

I guess what I'm wondering is, have any of your surgeons or nuts set a goal for you that you thought was a little too much?

I see it possible but don't stress it ! it will come off and slow down as your body lets it. I lost 59 lbs in 4 mos. and ive seen people do way more than that so just believe and enjoy the melting process

I don't find goals like that helpful as you can end up upset you haven't met them. I find it much better to go with the flow. Some weeks are fast and some slow.

Yes,I also find goals like that sets us up to feel like failures when we dont stay right on target. At 4 months out I had to set new, smaller goals for myself. At 6.5 months out I said whatever to those and then I started relaxing and going with the flow as far as the scale's concerned.

Having said that,i've lost 122.5 in 9 months but I was heavier to start with (I am also more than double your age though and not a consistent exercizer)

It comes off fast sometimes, slow sometimes, not at all sometimes and you have to be able to keep your head positive and in the game at all times.(hehehe, not like me that freaked out like mad about the first 3 stalls I had)

It will come off in the end though if you follow your food plan and work out consistently.

Good luck and dont mind their goals too much.

I am pre-op but researched that loosing 2-5lbs a week is a healthy slow rate to lose at. So if you go by what your Nut recommend for you, that is about 12 lbs a month (12lbs also = a dress size) or 3 lbs a week. Which in my opinion is pretty good, but letting your body decide is very good advice.

LOL! I have 200lbs to lose to get to my goal, if I could loose 5 or more lbs a week for a year, I might make it! B)

Hope this helps, please, keep us posted!

It isn't impossible but it doesn't mean it happens for everyone. Also, this process isn't about just losing pounds. Your body also changes in muscle tone and body fat percentage, which doesn't always show up on a scale.

The longer you stick close to the plan, the better the odds you will reach that goal.

My surgeon originally suggested I have a goal of 140 pounds, which I thought I could reach in six months. That didn't happen.

I started at 5'7" and 255 pounds. At the end of 6 months, I weighed 185 pounds. This was a 70 pound loss, and I felt fabulous. Feeling good about myself made me much less likely to want to continue dieting to lose weight. I also realized that 140 was just too low of a goal for me. I readjusted my ultimate goal to 155.

From February to September, I was exercising regularly (a lot) and eating about 1,200 calories and not getting all my Water in. I didn't really lose any weight despite all of the exercise. However, my overall body composition was changing. I was losing inches and gaining muscle. My body fat composition changed from 40 to 26 percent.

In September, I lowered my calories to less than 800 and upped my Water, and the weight has started coming off again. Since September, I've lost 11 pounds. I am still losing.

I agree that that sound 120 in 10 months sounds fast.

You can talk to your Surgeon , and Nut to set the goal that your more comfortable with! Setting your own goals that's best for you. In my opinion it is equally as important to follow the program getting in Protein first, keeping hydrated walking. Etc.

You are going to do fine.

Keep Positive. Keep us posted.

Congrats, we are supporting you!

Thank you! I'm worried that setting goals will make me disappointed. I have a goal weight, but I feel that slow and steady while getting in Protein, Water, and exercise will help me in the long run

Yes, I'm definitely hoping I will see a size/measurement difference versus numbers! This is going to be a long journey. Congrats on the 26%!

My surgeon told me research shows only 5% of patients make it to goal weight. And to remember the surgery is only a tool. The sleeve will help you loose 60-80% of your excess weight. He also told me to set small goals(ie. 10 lbs or 15 lbs a month) and do not think this is the "cure all". I wouldn't stress over lbs and time limits, you don't want to become discouraged.

You know,as long as you understand why the rest dont make it to goal.It is possible for everyone to make goal. The thing is very often after losing the bulk of what they have to,people just dont seem to care to much about the last 10 or 15 pounds.

It gets a lot more difficult to lose the last 10-15 and people very often are very happy and satisfied with the way they look.Life happens, the surgery gets "old" and they dont try for goal.

A BMI of 25 is not an absolute but more or less what one should weigh.Dr's however will go by the 25 BMI goal (mostly) and if you dont get there you become part of the stats of the "not reached goal".

That might take 6 months, it might take a year, it might take 18 months! I think putting a time on it like that sets you up to feel bad if you don't make it that quickly. We all like to think that since we had weight loss surgery its going to fly off us at lightening speed, and for some it does, but I know when I had lapband it was slllllooooooooooooow just like if I was doing weight watchers or something like that.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
