Should I Be Freaking Out Like I Am?

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow makes it 3 weeks out for me. Since my surgery, I've only lost 7 pounds!!!?? Total since preop is about 24 pounds. How come it isn't coming off so quickly for me like everyone else it seems??

I'm following the diet, trying to get all my Protein and Water in, walking as much as I can ( my feet swelled and its painful). I feel like I'm doing everything right. But it's not working!! Any advice would be appreciated.

Give it time. I'm 2 weeks and including preop I'm down 15 pounds. But u may be losing inches and That's good too. Did u do measurements before you started? Overall Our body is adjusting and in due time you will be dropping weight.

Don't forget that the lower your starting BMI is, the slower we lose. I was at 240 on surgery and I have only lost 20 lbs since Oct. 1st. I don't count my calories but when I increased my food intake, the weight came off quicker. Just be patient.

Thanks for responding. I have been keeping my measurements but they've only gone down a little over an inch. I just keep reading about people losing like 30 lbs post op 2-3 weeks and I'm nowhere near that. I was in tears all last night and have been pretty depressed last few days. ????

I lost 9 lbs the first week and then nothign for another 2 weeks ..... the first month total I think I lost 11 lbs. but month two I am close to 20 . your body is healing right now , keep the faith there is no way you cant loose weight with the limited calories. stick to the plan and keep doing what your doing it will happen and woosh it will come off. also during the time that I didnt loose wieght in lbs the inches were melting off me. from what I hear we will have many of these stalls some longer some shorter.... ( note that my sister went a whole month after the first week of loosing nothign then woosh 5 lbs)

stay strong I know its irritating but it willhappen .. !!!

Really? The lower the bmi is the slower the weight loss? I started at 43 and now I'm 38.5??? Does it pick up?

Thank you. The majority I read on this site is people talking about losing huge numbers at the beginning. Thank you for evening it out for me. I forced myself to not get on the scale for 4 days and expected at least 1 pound and it didn't happen.

I struggle with this myself, just 3 weeks (not quite) out, i think we are all just obsessed and wanting it to fall off. Fact is bodies are different. If you aren't eating thousands of calories a day, it will come off, no matter when or whether you stall. If you are unsure of what you are consuming, track your calories on a site like myfitnesspal or sparkspeople or something similiar. Remember that our bodies retain lots of Fluid after surgery (i came out like 10 lbs heavier than surgery weight, that was a bummer!). If we look at posts of newbies like us, we are all questioning why we can eat so much or so little, why we are losing so much or so little, etc....and then read posts from people a few months out and it seems all different! Hang in there and no worries, there is no way at this point that the surgery did not work! As long as you aren't drinking tons of calories (full on sugar juices, milkshakes, etc.) and consuming enough to maintain (probably a couple thousand) the weight will come. I've read posts of people 2 weeks out that don't lose for weeks. I'm fairly stalled right now myself!

Give it time, I am 7 weeks out and his a 3 week stall from week 3-6 I was getting frustrated, but then it started coming off again. Stalls are normal and while I wasnt losing weight I was losing inches. After a 3 week stall it felt good even to lose a pound. I try not to weight myself everyday like I was other wise that can get to you. Hang in there, it will happen with time. :)

That sounds about right. I did not even start weighing until the third week because of Water weight from surgery. I gained 20 lb from the IV dripping into me for 4 days. It did not help that I was unable to go to the bathroom for 3.5 of those days. As the previous poster said, give it some more time. And it will happen. Hang on!

Thank you very much. I appreciate the pep talks. It's so annoying though, everyone keeps asking how much I've lost!!!

Ha! I DID weigh as soon as I got back from the hospital because apparently I like to torture myself- I gained 18lb from the surgery which was lame! A lot of that is coming off over these first several days though so that's a relief!

I actually weigh everyday on my Wii fit. I have learned to look for my patterns...lose for awhile and then have a bounce up and losing again.

I don't freak out like I used to pre op. Also, everyone loses at a different pace depending on alot of factors. Try to remember this is a marathon not a sprint. Take each day as it comes.

I do have to say it will take awhile to adjust to the whole process. We place so much stock on what the numbers say as an indication of our success. I've had to learn to look at all of the other things I'm getting back in my life...confidence, enjoyment, my health, etc.

I lost 16# the first month and now at almost 4 months out getting close to 60#. I am a slow and steady loser. I think we all see the success stories that lost 30+ lbs in a month and wonder what we are doing wrong if we don't have the same kind of loss. We are all individuals and will lose at our own pace. This was a tough lesson for me! If you are following your plan then it WILL work.

You are doing great! Relax and focus on healing, resting and taking care of yourself!!! The weight will come off. My dr & NUT told me ok average anywhere from 2-4# a week was normal...sometimes more and sometimes less.

I guess the fantasy exceeded my reality. I've been pretty depressed for some reason. In the last 2 1/2 months I've quit smoking (after 25 years) and diet coke and coffee (just about as long) not to mention all the sugar that is no longer being ingested because of the preop and post op diets. Could be withdrawal from all of that. Or the panic of going back to work on Wednesday or the "hugeness" of the surgery is finally hitting me, if that makes sense.

Anyway, thank you all for being there for me...

It makes perfect sense but you have already made so many good changes for your health.

You will do great!! Just try not to stress too much (easier said than done I know).

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
