Some good, quick, healthy breakfast ideas??

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I am new here. I've been banded since August 4th, 2006. I'm down 38 pounds since then, and I am thrilled!

With school in full swing, I need to find some fast Breakfast ideas, that are healthy, filling and of course yummy! I might get some unflavored protien powder and mix it in the light apple juice bottles I have, and then I will have something tasty and full of protien.

I KNOW there has to be other ideas out there!!! I am not real food savy, and in the morning, I am more worried about getthing the kids ready and out the door, to think about making myself something. I usually head out for the morning after the kids are gone, so I need to be able to grab something.

Thanks for any ideas ahead of time!

I'm anxious to be an active part of this community!

Dawn

hi and welcome!

How did you lose so much so fast?

how many times a day do you eat?

how many ounces per meal?

how do you measure? with a cup or a scale?

thanks

Hi KM! Well, I can't really give you any REAL details. I dont relaly measure my foods. I just eat and only eat until I am full. I usually only have a bottle of tropicana light apple juice for breakfast. SOme days I have a bowl of Kashi Krunch Cereal and some skim milk...

I have been eating a lot of fish... Broiled or baked in butter and with crumbs... however it is made at the resturant!! I have a veggie too, and Water.< /span>

For dinner, I have been on a tuna salad kick. I get my tuna in those little pouches, from Starkist (??) I add some miracle whip light, and eat it on ritz.. I usually eat the entire pouch and about 20 ritz??

I am not really measuring or counting anything. I know I need my protien, and I try to get that (my doc said between 30 and 50 g a day), I drink TONS of water, and well, I just eat a lot less food. I dont notice much restriction, really, I was banded um, 2 weeks ago; 3.4cc in a VG band. If I want something sweet, I have it. I dont have 2 or 3 or 4 of them, I have one. I even had a chocolate shake and loved every bit of it!

I just have cut my eating WAY back...even tho I want to eat more, I just dont. I did this to loose weight and I am fighting the desire to eat like I did.

I have felt things get stuck lately. If I do not chew things enough or eat too fast, I feel it stuck right at the base of my throat. I DONT like it, so I DONT want to feel that way. That has been a good detrent, that is certain!

I wish I could be more specific. I just eat, not a lot, and keep my body burning. It oddly seems that if I eat the foods I used to eat, off and on, my body tends to loose. If I just eat small amounts of Bandlife food I dont loose as much. I think it has to do with that starvation mode people talk about. My body is happy to be eating that stuff agian!!! hahahaha

Good luck, and lets keep in touch... since we are only days away from our bandiversary!!

Thanks Dawn.

What do you mean by: "3.4cc in a VG band"?

How many cc's is your band (how big is it)?

I have a 4cc band.

I had surgery was 8/1/01

My first fill was 1.8, i think and I could not eat solids without extgreme pain in my chest as soon as I swallowed esophageal spasms, I later learned) so I had to have a partial unfill. now i thin kits 1.4. I can eat solids wothout pain now but do not think I have much restriction because I can eat anything I want and I know I'm eating more than 4oz. per meal. No foods are bothering me.

I'm not really sure of the fill amounts but I know that I had a very small fill for my fisr one and then I was too tight and had some taken out.

Hi Dawn, I was just recently banded on Oct. 3rd. but my pre-op breakfast is what I have now too. A Yoplait Yogurt smoothie is quick and portable and has always held me over until lunch. I know it's not much but it has Protein, is good and also quite filling... to me anyway.

Also, another quickie is the pre-cooked scrambled eggs that are sold in the freezer section of our Walmart. They're pre-formed into little patties. Pop it in the microwave and it's good to go in 30 seconds. Wrap in a napkin and take off. I eat on the way to school every day. I'd rather sleep in than get up early enough to fix anything elaborate.

Hi Dawn,

My favorite quick breakfast is a Protein bar. If I don't have that around my old standy is ... leftovers! I am also getting the kids out of the house in the a.m. so my breakfast has to be fast and portable. Protein Bars are easy and always available, though I get mightily sick of the sweetness sometimes. So if there's anything left over from a recent meal I'll often just grab that. It will only take a very small amount of cold meat to satisfy me for hours. Just now, for example, I just ate about a quarter of yesterday's lunch sandwich (of which I only ate half for lunch) and that will hold me until lunchtime today.

This is one of the best things about being banded, for me. I never worry about having "enough" to eat, because a very little bit IS enough! ;-)

Hi there Dawn,

I've just been banded 2 weeks so am not making recipe again yet, but pre-band it is my very favorite quick breakfast. According to MasterCook, here is the nutrition info:

Per Serving: 96 Calories; 3g Fat; 14g Protein; 2g Carbohydrate; 0g Dietary Fiber; 18mg Cholesterol; 588mg Sodium. Exchanges: 2 Lean meat.

Egg Muffins (makes 12)

3 3/4 cup Egg Beaters if using silicone muffin pans. If using regular muffin tins with paper liners use 3 cups egg beaters.

1-2 tsp. Spike Seasoning (or salt can be used)

1 cup grated low fat cheese (I like sharp cheddar or a blend of cheddar/Jack cheese)

1 cup diced Canadian bacon, lean ham, or crumbled cooked turkey sausage

Optional, but highly recommended, 3 green onions diced small.

Optional: chopped veggies such as blanched broccoli, red pepper, zucchini, mushrooms, etc.

Preheat oven to 375 F. Use regular or silicone muffin pan, 12 muffin size. If using silicone pan, spray with nonstick spray. If using regular muffin pan, put two paper liners into each slot, then spray liner with nonstick spray.

In the bottom of the muffin cups layer diced meat, if using, vegetables, if using, cheese and green onions. You want the muffin cups to be about 2/3 full at this point, with just enough room to pour a little Egg Beaters around the other ingredients. Pour Egg Beaters into large measuring bowl with pour spout, add Spike (or salt), and beat well. Pour egg into each muffin cup until it is 3/4 full. Stir each muffin slightly with a fork. Bake 25-35 minutes until muffins have risen and are slightly browned and set.

Muffins will keep at least a week in the refrigerator without freezing. Egg muffins can be frozen and reheated. For best results, thaw in refrigerator before reheating. Microwave on high about 2 minutes to reheat.

I love the MetRx Protein bars. I think they have 23g of protein and they actually taste good. With restriction, they may even be too large for you. I also like the Detour and UTurn protein bars, again, lots of protein. I don't have the other nutritional information. But I use them as a Meal Replacement and early on, they were all I could eat for breakfast. It's a great way to get lots of protein in and not have to stop to mix a shake.< /p>

My favorites have been the Atkins Protein bars, most of which have about 15-20 grams of Protein. They have the most Fiber of any bars I've found, and have been easy to eat even when I'm super-restricted. MetRx bars are good too, but they are really big!

Read the labels before you pick any protein bars. There are LOTS out there that look like they might be good, but are loaded with sugar and not enough protein. You should be able to get at least 20 gms of protein for no more than 200 calories.

Over the past three years I've used them both as Meal Replacements for breakfast or lunch or as Snacks if I'm hungry. Whatever is right at the time.

Of course this is all dependant on what you can tolerate (I've heard some bandsters have trouble with eggs).

A Protein bar is good if you're on the go.

When I was traveling a lot for work, I'd do a quick Protein shake in the A.M. and drink it in the car.

I also used to make a few hard boiled eggs to keep in the fridge and eat one on the go/in the car.

Light yogurt with 1/4 cup cheerios or honey nut cheerios serves 2 purposes-protein AND Fiber. And its good, too. I know, sounds gross, but it's really good.

Those yogurt smoothie drinks.

oatmeal

I love toast with peanutbutter and a few banana slices

*I ALWAYS make an effort to have Protein with breakfast, even if it's only peanutbutter or milk. It holds off my appetite and gives me energy.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
