I know I am asking this question early but does anyone know when we are allowed to eat popcorn. It is so strange but that is the only thing I am craving and miss!

I think I started at 8 weeks. I also started popping my own after reading some suggestions from other people here. I really like it as a treat. :)

You will also notice that in the beginning you won't have any cravings and many say that their preferences change. You may not ever crave popcorn again!

I was told about 3 months. You have to be careful because of the husks in the kernals. Eating it too early and they can get stuck in your sutures. I love popcorn and have continued eating it after surgery. You just have to enjoy in small quantities. It is a slider food, which means you can eat a lot of it (think of a wet piece of popcorn, how small and mushy it gets!). And like the above person mention, if you can pop your own, that is the best. Then you can control what is going on it.

You can also make faux popcorn out of cauliflower, Dr. Oz had a recipe for it. I chop it into popcorn sized pieces, lay it out on a baking sheet, bake at 420 for about 12-14 min, then I sprinkle white cheddar popcorn sprinkles (from Cost Plus world market), and its yummy. Of course for this one, you've got to make sure you're cleared for crunchy foods!

It is impossible to get anything caught in your staples or sutures because they are on the outside of the stomach not on the inside

Our stomaches do not produce the digestive enzymes needed to break down tough and fibrous materials during the beginning phases of healing. Even later it is always important to chew thoroughly to help your stomache digest the food and allow it to travel thru successfully. It is very possible to get food stuck within your sleeve and have to visit the ER to have it removed. If not caught early it will cause vomiting, pain and irritation. The staple line takes weeks to start healing and when it does it is not a smooth line. All of our stomaches will heal with a bit of scar tissue. Some more than others.

Always follow your drs plan unless you just like to gamble :P

Thanks everyone. I was just wondering when it would be safe.....I am not a risk taker at all so I will wait for about 2-3 months before I try popcorn!

popcorn is and has always been my favorite snack. I started eating it when I was 2 month post-op. I do pop my own in my popcorn machine. I use a tablespoon of oil and 1/3 cup kernels. I do lightly salt. I don't feel bad using a little salt because I do not have high blood pressure and I rarely use salt on anything. I use it very sparingly when I cook. I have been making the popcorn once a week.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
