8 Lb Weight Gain Two Days After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi all -

I had my vertical sleeve done on 8/28. I ended up staying two nights because I couldn't keep any liquids down on the second day. I finally started feeling much better and was released today!

Quick question - I weighed myself as soon as I got home from the hospital and have gained 8 pounds!!! How is that possible only drinking a small amount of Clear Liquids? ? So discouraging!

Don't be a slave to your scale! You should just wait until your follow up appointment with your doctor to weigh. Don't weigh yourself everyday, it just messes with your head. This journey is mentally challenging enough without adding this to it.

Hi

I suggest you dont weigh yourself for at least 10 days.I was up 10 pounds 2 days after the sleeve and it drove me insane and made me so depressed. And for me it didnt start coming off until day 10.after that I dropped another,if I remeber correctly,25 pounds the first month.

Dont torture yourself.Just focus on sipping, resting and healing (I also watched cooking programs 24/7 for the first 10 days...lol)

Good luck and keep sipping.

xxo

Also remember while you are in the hospital they are pumping you full of liquids like a Water ballon on the 4th of July.

It will take time for the gas, Water weight, and any *ahem* left overs to move through your digestive system. It will come off.

Didn't gain it all in two days, can't lose it all in two days.

Txgirl36: I was sleeved by the same doctor, same hospital, same day & I gained 10 pounds. No worries, they pumped us full of IV fluids with sodium in it. It will come off for sure. I have removed my scale & will wait for my post-op visit next week.

On the most fundamental level - you KNOW it's not fat gain, right? Which means it's something else. And my bet is on Fluid. If it's Fluid weight, it doesn't matter.

I'm not saying any of these are the case, but consider things like:

  • You probably got more in IV fluids than what you would normally drink. And you have fluid retention - swelling, if nothing else.
  • Is TOM anywhere close? (don't answer that) I can gain about 13 lbs with TOM.
  • Have you pooped? Poop has weight. :)
  • If you're on your own with fluids now, there's probably been a marked decrease. Especially over the IV fluids. When your body stops getting fluids - even temporarily, it reacts by turning into a hoarder. Just plain Water weighs about 8 lbs per gallon.
  • Step away from the scale! Do you know you could have weighed yourself 3 hours earlier and been 6 or 7 pounds lighter? Our weights fluctuate so much, especially in your place of being in a fat burning mode.

Thank you everyone! It was good to hear that this is pretty normal. I've put away my scale and vowed not to use it until my 2 week follow up with my surgeon.

thedogsmommy, it's a vicious cycle: you need to stay hydrated or the nausea will get worse. Did the doc give you pills for the nausea? I took mine every 6 hours for the first few days and it helped me keep up my Fluid intake.

Good luck!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
