Day 5 Post-Op Heartburn, Refluz And Indigestion.

Recommended Posts

I had VSG and hiatal hernia repair Jul 30 2012, and this week has been quite the roller coaster. The major issue I'm dealing with is heartburn, reflux, indigestion and belching that does not want to come out. Last night it was SO bad, that my belly was totally distended, unomfortable, and squished my lungs. Today is slightly improved. Has anyone else had this experience? I am unable to tolerate Protein in my Clear liquids. I thought maybe that is what set me off on this path. I mixed unflavored whey isolate with sugar free lemonade, and it was beyond putrid. It was absolutely disgusting, and I cannot bear to look at another protein right now. Maybe the lemonade did it, the acid? Today Ive decided to drink room temp Water, and diluted gatorade to keep hydrated in hopes that my stomach will continue to calm down, and I will try to resume protein intake tomorrow. The whey protein isolate shakes were tolerable at best pre-op, for the sheer fact I could chug them and be done. I felt so prepared prior to the surgery. I took my time and sampled lots of different products and thought I could handle this part. Doing my best to remember that its still early, and that my stomach has to heal and that in a few weeksI'll be feeling much better, but its hard to keep sight of that when im in the throws of post-op misery.

Anyone have suggestions?

I had my surgery the same day. My Dr gave me Previcid Solutabs to keep the heartburn under control. I too have been belching up a storm, not to mention the passin gas. My family calls me the musical sleeve! Dr told me not to worry so much about the Protein the first week, but to concentrate on hydration! I really haven't had much protein as I'm on Clear Liquids and I think Isopure tastes like vomit! I the best thing I have tolerated is pop cycles and egg drop Soup sans eggs

I know how you feel, my stomach can't handle Protein today so I'm drinking Gatorade all day and sucking on sugar free ice pops to keep hydrated. I have a burp in my stomach that hurts but it won't come up.

Have you used any of the Gas-X quick dissolve strips or chewables? Those helped me a lot.

Sleeved 7/30/12 as well. Dr.prescribed Prevacid daily for 1st month. Dr. Recommended i Focusi on getting 100 cc's of Protein Shakes, mixture with Water every hour. I'm also sipping on homemade chicken broth that's been strained. Sipping away at water or Decaf tea constantly. Sometimes I feel like I have a trapped burp but I've found that walking around house helps tremendously. Good luck!

I was sleeved on 7/17/12 and totally feel your pain. I am taking prevacid daily per doctor's orders but I had reflux prior to surgery as well. I still cannot tolerate Protein Drinks of any type. Not the Isopure premixed Fruit Drinks, not the GNC mixes or even the BariCare mixes that I was on prior to surgery. I am worried about this as my doc presses the importance of Protein as a healing mechanism but right now I could care less. If I cannot get or keep it down then it is no longer important right now. My focus right now is staying hydrated as I can only sip liquids which does not nearly quench my ungodly thirst.

Thanks for your replies everyone. Good to know I am not alone. I will ask my surgeon first thing tomorrow morning about getting on prevacid or something similar!

My Dr gave me Zantac(?), I have to take it 2 times per day for several months. He says it is a MUST.

I have the same issues! I gag now even trying to drink a sm amt of Protein Shake. I am trying to get my Water in, i was bumped up to puree on wed and have started adding real food which is sooo much better. Thin cream of wheat, applesauce, i made a beef stew w no potatoes but zucchini and veggies and blended it w broth which results in 25g of Protein per 8oz serving. Plain Greek yogurt w honey to sweeten and cottage cheese. So far have been able to tolerate it all, whey protein seems to not agree w me and the rash i had on my stomach has dissapeared making me think it was the cause. Yuck. I also had tuna w mayo and tolerated it fine, i have to get my protein in somehow as the shakes arent working. Also i was told to take the prevacid for two months. Try laying flat or on your left side to get rid if that air in your abdomen. It has to be absorbed into your tissue to go away and took me zbout 5 days.

I take prevacid for reflux and you can buy baby mylicon drops over the counter. They help with getting the gas out ( I would have paid to burp or belch back then). This really helped me

Why is it that being sleeved gives us heartburn? I never had heartburn or reflux in my life now 3wks post sleeve, I have it all the time. Why is that?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
