Recommended Posts

Is this normal? Only able to get in about 8oz of liquids and under 200 calories each day. Almost scares me.

You're doing great on liquid. Congrats on that. And the calories... Sounds like mine about 5 days out. Still on Clear Liquids I take it?

I'm 5 days post-surgery, too, and that's about all I'm able to do, too. With having to take such small sips, it's impossible to get a whole lot of liquids inside. I sip all day long and still only end up emptying one glass full of Water.< /p>

get a kitchen time and sip one ounce of Water every 15 minutes. for some reason sugar free popsicles went down really easy also sucking on ice chips. you need to get your fluids in and 8oz/day is not enough. water down some chicken broth (less sodium) the more fluids you get the better you will feel.

No that's not enough. Try your hardest to sip literally thru out the day. Keep a water bottle or whatever liquid you like, crystal light etc and sip sip sip. You will get dehydrated faster than you think. You don't need to gulp Water down. But just sip slowly but often. If you start to feel very tired or dizzy/ light headed that's a sure sign of dehydration. Better to avoid that. Good luck!

You can count all your liquids towards your daily total...protein shakes, Water, Protein Drinks, broth, e tc. If you're truly only getting 8 oz of LIQUID per day, you definitely need to work on increasing that number. If you're getting 8 oz of WATER, along with other liquids, total it all up, and see where you are. You should be pushing to get 48-64 oz of liquids in, total, in order to avoid dehydration. And whenever you can add Protein (unflavored protein powders, etc), do...to get the most protein possible. All the best to you!! :)

I would say 8 oz. is definitely not enough, you're going to run the risk of becoming dehydrated. You won't be able to get 64 oz. in yet but you should be able to do around 40 oz for the first few days and then work up to 64 oz. based on your NUT's recommendations. Keep in mind, if you are on full liquids whatever you are consuming does count towards that total, even if it's not Water. Your Protein Shakes, your Soups, etc do count.

You should be doing an ounce of liquid every 15 minutes. You need way more than 8oz

40 should be good for now.

Try to get the ounce every 15.. its a chore but you need it!

The 200 calories isn't the issue the liquid definitely is.

What is the exact problem with getting your liquids in? Does it knot up as it's going down? Are you getting too many air bubbles and it feels like your esophagus is twisting and it hurts going from the esophagus into the tummy?

Are you using a med cup (1 ounce cup) to drink? If you don't have those, how about a shot glass. Measure it first and see how many ounces are in it so you can keep track. For the first 5 days I was suppose to keep a list and chart each 1 ounce i drank. Each one ounce = about 3 sips. If you use a 2 ounce shot glass consider that 6 sips.

Is the problem cold Water? Have you tried any sort of decaff tea? I had a problem with Water the 2nd day out and I drank Bigelow Decaff Peppermint Tea with Truvia (any Artificial Sweetener will do). The Peppermint actually soothed my belly and my throat and esophagus. It tastes good warm and even during the night when I had the fan on and it got cool it tasted good. This helped me to get down my water.

Do not drink out of a water bottle. It causes too much air at first and really HURTS going down.

I'm at 6 weeks out and I'm at 450 calories a day and I'm trying to pick it up but I'm getting 59-65 ounces of Protein in and all 64 ounces liquids.

Dehydration is really really not good for you, so try to pick up the liquids, try sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free Jello, broth, for Protein try a few sips of Isopure.

I used the med cups they gave me and I kept one with water and one with tea, I finished my 3 sips of tea and then I would work on the water. Repour my tea into a med cup and then do it that way.

Just do your best, but you need to try to get more liquids in than 8 ounces. Keep the water at your nightstand when you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night - try to get one or two ounces in then. I eventually could get 3 ounces in by sip sip sip (pour) sip sip sip (pour) sip sip sip (pour) but even at this time I can't do a whole 4 ounces in a decent succession.

Best of luck to you and if the liquid intake doesn't pick up soon, contact your doctor's office, they may want to check you out and make sure you don't need to a quick IV.

They gave me the med cups, and told me one oz per 15 minutes. I thought I could use a water bottle, but am not getting enough in. Only finished half a water bottle yesterday (which is about 8 oz) Plus I had a total of about 8oz of Soup./yogurt/and pudding.

I am going to immediately start using the med cups. I am having the discomfort of when it hits my stomach, it feels like its going through a knot, or its knotting up. Its very uncomfortable, and I figured it was meaning I was full, but maybe not. I don't know. These sensations are all so new.

right after surgery we all have that weird feeling. like it is hitting a wall and then going thru. it is not a feeling of fullness.. you need to get your fluids in or will be dehydrated and a re-admission

You'll get dehydrated at those levels. I know 64 oz is hard at first...but get in as close to that as you can. You literally have to sip, sip, sip constantly. Are you drinking Isopure for Protein? 200 calories is REALLY low too, you don't want to get run down.

I think the first responder thought you were getting 80oz - not 8 oz! I am 2 weeks out, and the first week was really hard to get my liquids in......grape g2 gatorade went down easier than Water, and I was a HUGE water drinker before surgery! Just keep trying and trying - you DO NOT want to go back to the hospital!! It can be done - keep working at it!!!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
