5 Days Out, Terrible Insonmnia

Recommended Posts

Ever since I got home I can't sleep. It's like my mind thinks I should be resting an recovering from surgery, but my body disagrees. I also find that reading, watching tv or being on the Internet make a bit dizzy and uncomfortable. I feel like I am not interested in anything to keep me entertained until I recover and do more things. HELP!

I got something from the pharmacy to help and things soon change once I could lie on my stomach. But I still have sleeping issues. I can get to sleep no problem but am wide awake a few hours later. I am sure it will sort itself out soon.

Good luck x

omg, I'm having this problem too. Have hardly slept a wink since surgery. It's been bugging me because this was supposed to be my recovery time and now work starts back up again tomorrow and I haven't done a whole lot of resting. I'm hoping though that the long day of work will force me into sleep tomorrow night. I know one of the side effects of my antibiotic is insomnia so I'm hoping once I finish that it will help also.

Please, someone who is further out and over the sleeping problem, tell us how long it took.

I am 5 weeks out and I can easily fall asleep, but inevitably wake up at 3 or 4 a.m., then to only need a nap in the afternoon. I've tried going with out a nap and to bed around 9 pm, but to no avail, I wake up at 3 or 4. I go back to sleep most times after an hour or so, but it's driving me nuts.

How long should this last? I really don't want to start taking another pill.

Wow this problem is really commen , I am ten days out and the first week I was getting a couple of hours in and rarely needed a nap. Even though I felt super tired and drained. I blames it on pain or discomfort. Last couple of days has been a bit better. But not what I wanted. I go to bed late 12 or one expecting to wake up at 9 at least and it's always 6 to 7. And I don't like it. Like someone said this is my time to heal and recover sleep late take long naps. But I should not complain cuz last couple of days at least a sleep a few hours straight. I saw somewhere on rants and raves. That someone complained about living of of 5 hours of sleep. I hope our body adjusts. Oh and also that loosing part of our tummy affects our rem sleep. This is something I did not know pre surgery. Yes k hope to here from people months into surgery

I was waking up at 1:00 and then going down to the living room and sleeping on the recliner because getting out of bed was an issue for me at first. I noticed I peed every day 1:00am - 3:00am 5:30-6:00am Then I would get up.

I am actually sleeping pretty now. I had a rough time about 14 days out (I also had a drain). I am also a stomach sleeper and I hate sleeping on my back. Once I got on my sides I did so much better sleeping through the night and 2 nights ago I got on my stomach. I have heard people say they got on their stomach the first week. I will be six weeks out tomorrow. Realize everyone heals differently.

Ambien was mentioned...It works great for a lot of people, and for some people it really causes more issues. After I weaned off ambien by using Tylenol PM -then I stopped the Tylenol PM and had a 1/2 cup of skim milk before bed, I started sleeping better through the night. Reasons I weaned off ambien are many, besides it was just another chemical in my system, having sleep apnea it could be dangerous but the biggest issue, a lot of my weight came from it.

I had been on Ambien for years. I didn't realize it but I used to wake up in the middle night while on Ambien and eat. I found a bowl of popcorn (with melted cheese on my desk) next to an apple core and milk. Sometimes it would be slim fast & apple. I accused my son of doing it, and it was me....I didn't realize I was sleep eating. He told me, Mom you get up every night. Since most of the time I would take the Ambien at 10:00pm and I would stay away until 3:00 - it was about 3:30 - 4:00 am that I would get up and do this, approximately 1/2 hour after I fell asleep. Ambien is known for this. So if you see yourself waking up hungry in the middle of the night or find weird food items somewhere, maybe finding something else to help sleep is a good idea. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it has been reported more and more frequently that there is a problem with sleep eating and ambien.

Good luck and eventually sleep will be returned.

Nyquil knocked me out right away. Now that I don't have a cough anymore, I won't take it, as its not a long term solution. I think I'll try the Tynelol PM and start with that.

I'm 5 weeks out and I've always had an insomnia problem. I regularly took Lunesta before surgery which was awesome. Since surgery, my doctor said I should not take it and suggested crushing up Melotonin and mixing it with a little sugar free Cool Whip and taking it about 30 minutes before bedtime. It worked like magic, but I found that on the nights I take it, I usually need a mid-day nap the next day. Maybe I'm taking a little too much...BUT it's nice to sleep through the night on the nights I take it. :)

I'm 3.5 wks post-op & just started sleeping in the last few days! I'd sleep maybe 3 or 4 hrs a night & was miserable! I increased my activity during the day & managed to sleep on my side (finally - still cant sleep on my tummy)!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
