Im Having A Food Funeral For The Next 3 Weeks! Anyone Else?

Recommended Posts

Im getting sleeved 4 weeks from tomorrow. My friend who did this in january said that she wished she had had a food funeral! So I thought, ya know, not a bad idea. I had a fathers day BBQ yesterday, ended up with lots of extras. I think that as long as I dont gain before my surgury date its ok?? My DR said I only have to do a 7 day pre op diet, so it appears that I can eat whatever for 3 weeks prior. Am I setting myself up for a failure? It seems like most people pre op are loosing alot. I feel like I want to enjoy my last few weeks of meals because once I have the surgury I wont, one, be able to eat for 6 weeks, two, will be eating small portions and three, will no longer be able to eat anything I want.

I eat very healthy, for the most part, and have been dieting since the beginning of the year. I also excersize regularly, so correct me if im wrong, but im eating and enjoying my funeral for the next 3 weeks :D

Why do you want to do a food funeral? Do you think you won't be able to eat certain things? What do you think you will miss?

I read all the forums and thought I might not be able to eat steak after VSG. I didn't have the luxury of time for a food funeral, as I was informed of my surgery date within the two week pre-op diet. I was obedient because this surgery is so serious and I trusted my surgeon.

I am able to eat steak now, although very limited quantities, Please don't assume you need a food funeral because someone else thought you should. It is that much more weight for you to lose, and it delays adjusting your mindset by that much.

Im not gorging myself, just eating what I want. I've been dieting for 5 months and just want to eat what I want before surgury. My mind set cant be changed overnight, thats a process in its self.. been working on it for years. I just got done doing an 8 week class about mind set and it really helped the way I think about things.

I know that I can still eat things I enjoy after surgury, just in smaller forms. To me, this is a life altering event and the start of a new life, kind of a re birth. My birthday(surgury date) is July 17 and I cant wait. Im ready to so a tri athlon, 10k and all the things I have been working up to. I did my first 5k a month ago and it felt great.

I did the same thing when I quit smoking back on October, had a little funeral, get rid of all my lighters in the house, ashtrays, detailed the cars. I have not cheated once since the day I quit...Oct 5, 2011. So I guess its my way of throwing out the old and in with the new! :D

Well, it is a definite adjustment, but life does go on. I am just six months out from my surgery date, but I am on my third annual "5K" which is mostly upstairs. It is billed as the 5K that feels like a 10K. I drive two days to get to the event, but I love it so much! It sounds like you have great goals and a good start to those goals.

I went nuts and I don't regret a bite. But everyone is different. I know me. I would still be mourning the things I didn't taste "one last time." I don't plan to visit Krispy Kreme anymore or eat half the junk I used to. It truly is dead to me, so I'm glad I said goodbye. I think I gained 10 pounds after I made the appt.

I crave good food now. It's a good thing ;)

I had what I called my food Farewell Tour. I ate a lot of stuff I didn't think I would be able to eat after surgery - both food types, and foods in combinations that probably won't be allowed or are really only satisfying in large bites.

Case in point: Rubio's Baja Original Fish Taco is one of my top five all-time favorite foods. Fried fish, yogurt sauce, cabbage, thick corn tortilla, and I add a salsa verde and lime. It's the nature of the thing that you have to open your mouth wide and take a big bite to get all the different components in one tasting. And it isn't the same thing if even one ingredient is missing.

Will I be able to enjoy my RBOFT again? Highly unlikely; if I even allow myself to have fried fish and corn tortilla, I might not be able to tolerate salsa and I certainly won't be able to take a huge bite and get all the flavors at once. So as my date approached, I had RBOFTs until I was literally sick of them and didn't want to eat any more. Then I had an extra couple, so I was really completely good and sick and the idea of having one was almost nauseating. For now, at least, I don't particularly want to have one.

So as part of a mourning process, and to (potentially) get yourself sick of your favorite foods and ready for your diet? I say go for it!

I had one this past weekend: went to a Chinese buffet. It was a place we've gone to since I was a child, so to me it wasn't just saying goodbye to food, but I was saying goodbye to that part of my life. I will be able to eat Chinese food again, yes, but never an all-out buffet food-orgy. I don't regret it at all. This week I'm doing a high Protein, low carb diet with lots of Protein Shakes before my pre-op diet starts. I'm glad I had the "food funeral", but am also glad it's over.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
