Whats Better Sleeve Or Ru En Y?

Recommended Posts

I have been sleeved for 7 months now and have lost 130 pounds. its definitely possible. Also if the sleeve does not work it can be converted to the RNY, but the RNY cannot be switched to being a sleeve. i say get the sleeve and if it is does not work(which im sure it will) then have it converted into the RNY.

Ultimately weight loss depends on the individual. Each surgery is a tool and my goals are up to me and how much hard work I put into it. I do not dare go into this expecting my sleeve to be my "cure all".

My sister had the sleeve done May 2011 and has lost 120 lbs and still losing, trying to stop actually. I myself would love to lose 170lbs and realize I have everything to do with that. I think regardless which surgery you decide upon you will be pleased with the results of either. As far as taking peoples opinions as negativity, I encourage bloggers to accept and embrace each persons opinion as just that and take it personally realizing their opinion is there reality and that is why this forum is so popular in the WLS community. Congrats to all sleeved, good luck to all who will be sleeved and best wishes to us all in our journey! :-)

I'm not reading through all the responses so these may or may not be duplicates.

Sleeve cons:

  • No dismembered stomach left behind <- this creeps me out

It kind of creeped me out a little at first but then I just thought I had my gallbladder removed; ppl get their tonsils, appendix and many other things removed. Its no different than that. :o

I didn't read through all the responses so I don't know if this was covered - but at the informational seminar I attended, the doctors said that the mortality rate of of RNY is 1/200 while the mortality rate for both the lap band and the sleeve was 1/2000.

I hadn't heard of the VSG before this seminar so I had decided I wanted the RNY but when I found out the above info and that these surgeons that I'm going to don't even do RNY anymore because of the complications. I thought the sleeve was the best option for me.

To all the comments who

Just say read other posts' date=' I do read them, however sometimes it's easier just to ask my own question and btw if ur just going to put read the posts then feel free not to post on my post. <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />[/quote']

Touché :)

I wanted to let you know that I have the same amount of weight to loose, maybe a little more. My doctor thinks the lap band or sleeve would be perfect for this amount of weight loss.

Another reason I am interested in the sleeve is the risk involved. The surgeon explained the risk for lap band as being risky as having a c-section. The risk for full bypass (R en Y) as risky as having a Hip replacement. Sleee is in the middle of this risk continuum. A hip replacement seems too risky!! I have researched lap band a great deal and I do not think I would have long term success like I would with the sleeve.

Wishing you wellness!

Even though your doc has only done 30 sleeves , isn't the sleeve the first part of the RNY procedure? So I would think he had lots of experience since he's done so many RNYs..

I agree. I think that any surgeon who has performed the RNY, which is a much more complicated surgery than the sleeve, would be more than qualified to do the sleeve. IMHO.

I haven't been sleeved yet, but I did consider RNY when I was making my decision. Ultimately the decision on the sleeve was for a few reasons. I felt like less change in my anatomy was a good thing. The chance of numerous Vitamin deficiencies is decreased in comparison with RNY. The sleeve, when done on a patient who is motivated and willing to follow the post-op direction, can yield as much weight loss as RNY. The complication risk seemed lower to me. With RNY because there is a stoma created and a reattachment of intestines, it seemed like there was more possible to go wrong. I was worried for a while, as I could not find as much information on the sleeve, but the more I've searched, I have found that there is a ton of information available, as well as the numerous successful members on this website. Now that I'm getting close I'm certain that I made the right decision on the sleeve. That being said, some things are right for different folks, I hope that no matter what you decide it goes well =)

My doctor told me after the sleeve absolutely no ibruprofen or Nsaids or aspirin. Too much chance of stomach bleeding. Actually if you look on the Aleve bottle, there is a waring that says May Cause Stomach Bleeding. I suffered from migranes before my surgery and took 2 Excedrin Migraine pills every night. Since my surgery, I have not had one headache.

I've been allergic to aspirin since I was 19, which what a lot of ppl don't know apparently including many doctors, you shouldn't take ibuprofen or alleve. Anyway I do suffer from the occasional migraine and I told my Dr. that tylenol just didn't really work for them and he prescibed me Fioricet Tab Nova, which does seem to work for my Migraines and all other types of pain that acetominaphen alone doesn't work for anymore.

One of the main things that made me chose to do the sleeve over RNY is the fact that I personally know people with RNY that have health issues because of it. With RNY many people get bowel obstructions, that is a life threatening issue. I personally would never want to experience dumping syndrome or malabsorption issues. There are several weight loss forums for RNY, if you spend time reading in them, you will hear them discussing all their major health issues. Are they directly related to RNY? I cannot be positive but I know that I do not want those issues. I chose the sleeve to be my Weightloss tool and to help me get HEALTHIER and not sicker as I age.

I need to lose 120-140 pounds and I am not sure if the sleeve would get me those kind of results. My surgeon says that r en y is the best. But I workout and think that the sleeve is a better choice. Has anyone lost 130 pounds or so? What was your time frame to do so? Does anyone workout? Basically any advice would help thanks guys.

I was just asking myself this question, I recently changed surgeons. The new surgeon reviewed my chart and suggested the sleeve. I had done all my research on the RNY and was convinced that was the way to go. I am scheduled for aug 6 for the sleeve. After more research.

I think the long term malabsorption issues that can occur did it for me. I need to lose about 145#, I like to exercise, so I think that will help a great deal. The success stories on this forum have been very inspirational. I wish you well on your endeavors, look forward to seeing the success story. Incidentally, don't let the surgeon "push" you . It is always and ultimately your decision. Blessings!

My aunt, who had the RNY several years ago, has had to have part of her intestines removed because of the bowel obstructions AND I just found out yesterday that she is going to be having a colostomy. I can't say that this is 100% because of complications years later from the bypass, but... (I mean, would she have still had bowel obstructions regardless?) I'm not a doctor. Granted she's kind of the poster child for what CAN go wrong. My best friend, who had her RNY two years ago, has done wonderfully. I'm sticking with the sleeve. :)

The thing that made me decide on the sleeve was the fact that I'm only 27 and the thought of living with malabsorption for way longer than most RNY patients scared me. I've had a bowel obstruction before and it was way more painful than child birth and I've given birth twice without pain meds (by choice). It was so bad that I had to be pushed around in a wheel chair because walking and standing up straight was excruciating. I don't want my intestines rearranged because I don't think it's natural to have your new stomach attached to the small intestine. The sleeve sounded like the least invasive but I do get scared of having staples in my stomach for the rest of my life :/ To me the sleeve was a no brainer. The DS is too invasive and the band creeped me out because it's a foreign object that could slip and then most people end up getting it removed. Good Luck OP in whatever you decide :)

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
