For many of us sleevers, especially at the beginning, if you feel "hungry" it could actually be extra acid in your stomach that is causing the sensation, not actual hunger. Taking a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) can normally get rid of this! Come to think of it, I don't know if it has to be a PPI or if any acid reducer will help. Prilosec, prevacid, zegerid are all PPI's for example. They work really well for us sleevers :)

It would at least be worth a shot. In the meantime, if you are stuck at home... try exercising?? Might as well do something extra productive to keep your mind off of it!

Oh say it ain't so that you feel hungry or have problems when you are home post-op. I work from home! I don't have to go to the office unless there is a meeting and that doesn't happen very often as we do most meetings by home. This is how I ended up gaining 40 pounds this past year!!!! I was ok with my diet and exercise program until I came home to work....it seems I mindlessly eat while staring at that computer for 10 hours per day. I am hopeful that this will be something that I can control with exercise once I have the surgery. I worked so hard to lose that 50 pounds last year only to gain 40 of it back. I have gotten so I watch alot more tv while working just to keep my mind off the run to see what I have in the cupboard to eat. I have cleaned those out and will be buying only what is absolutely necessary from now till surgery time.

I agree with the others who've said drink more Water. The other thing I've found helpful is to go brush my teeth. I know it sounds odd, but "delaying" eating to brush my teeth does two things; my mouth feels nice and clean and I find I don't want to lose that, and the delay is usually enough to derail my hunger. I do take an acid reducer (Dr's RX) daily, I'd check with your doc before adding that.

Since surgery I've implemented a strict "only eating at the dinner table" rule. I'm still reading while I'm there, but hoping to phase that out too. Trying to break the mindless eating cycle. Forcing myself to eat at the table, makes me evaluate whether or not I'm really hungry and want to take the time to stop what I'm doing and enjoy the food I'm taking in. Also instituted "when I want to graze", I force a 10 min walk. If I still want it when I'm back, that's fine, but it's at the table. Will be a hard habit to break, but for me, a place to start.

It's interesting that you say this... for me its actually the opposite. I have a much easier time avoiding eating too quickly (and hence, too much) when I AM at the table. During the day, if i'm home, I weigh out my Protein and eat a bite here and there while I'm doing other things. I don't let myself space it out too much, but I give myself 30 mins. I used to try for less, but I either end up eating too little (and not hitting my Protein goals) or too much (and being VERY uncomfortable). I guess having it in front of me makes me focus on it too much. It is much easier for me to do something else while I eat.

When I was first sleeved (well, at the 2 month mark), we would go out to eat... I would end up sitting there all meal coloring in my sister's kid's meal menu/coloring book thing because it helped me not eat too fast. The waitress was awesome :) We know her outside of the restaurant, and she started bringing me a coloring packet of my own LOL! No more stealing from my 6 year old sister!

Me as well. I will eat to fast and get full rather quickly with no distraction. So I will eat a bite, put fork down, chew chew chew, comment on someone's Facebook status, take another bite, check email. Now this works for me because I have realized what I CAN eat. Even at restaurants I either get a to go box first thing or put my 4-5 oz. on another plate then remove the rest from in front of me. That way no way can I over eat.

I deal with this by getting out of the house if I can. I'll go window shopping, take the dog for a long walk (she is a little fatty fat too) or go to the library. If I'm stuck in the house, I'll do laundry, something crafty (crochet, embroidery), play video games (exercise on the Wii or Harry Potter Lego) or talk on the phone in order to take my mind off of food. One day when I had a case of the eats,I sorted through my old wardrobe organizing it to prepare to get back into it. I'm three weeks out on Tuesday, June 5, so I know what you are feeling. :)

In the early days I felt very similar, although I wasn't really hungry, I thought of food - the lack of it - often. I made myself get 'busy'. I couldn't do much so I would play scrabble on Facebook or read to keep my brain focused on something else. I would also lift hand weights when I was watching telly... distraction is the best way to get around it!

Good luck =]

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
