I find myself extremely depressed right now. I'm in the process of the 6 month hoop jumping and still have 4 to go. I don't have to lose "x" amount of pounds before surgery so I have been eating anything I can get my hands on. I am looking so forward to surgery saving me that I've lost all self control. I need help!

I had this problem too prior to surgery. My doctor didn't require me to lose a specific amount of weight before, he just insisted that I follow the pre-op diet to the T. This might be an UNPOPULAR answer, but Im all for pigging out prior to getting the surgery as long as you realize that after you HAVE to make huge lifestyle changes. Im currently below my goal weight and starting to reintroduce some treats that I miss from my past. Not chips and Cookies and fried fatty crap, but things like a sandwich or some fruit juice. I was VERY strict with myself after surgery as this was my last chance. I had no bread, rice, potatoes or fruit juices of any kind. Had my first subway sandwich yesterday. Must say the bread was pretty tasty. Good luck

Only you can stop yourself. What I did was go through my kitchen and threw away all the junk food. I then cut my portion size down by half and was hungry for a week or so but then adjusted. This is a choice we make and I was determined. They told me that I couldn't loose any more weight, bc my BMI was too low so I tried to gain but kept loosing. :( Then the doc realized that I had comorbities and approved it anyways. You have come this far and have committed yourself to have this procedure, so now it's time to adjust your thinking by acknowledging that we really don't need to eat all that food anyways. You can do this. Time to get control of your choices and tame the head hunger monster! LOL ;) Good luck!

I'm sorry you're feeling depressed. I also had a lot of problems with depression during that time. I felt completely out of control and like my food addiction was actually getting worse! I felt like it was my last time to eat good stuff.

The good news is that it gets better post-op. I had a short bout with depression about 3 weeks out when I was on a stall. Since then, I've felt much better. The hunger is gone and my brain is slowly changing. You will no longer want everything that you once did. You will be concentrating on getting your Protein in and then you'll be full. It's amazing how your life and feelings will change.

Keep remembering there is an end in sight.

Girl.......I wrote hot checks to eat prior to the pre-op diet! LOL!!! The pre-op diet sucks, so enjoy every savory bite while you can; just be prepared to face the music before long. I didn't gain or lose, because I have always eaten whatever I wanted. That is how I ended up in this shape. What you don't want to do is pack on eatra pounds to have to lose too. Moderation and enjoy!!!!

I know it's hard I'm trying to control it good luck on your journey.

I am sorry you are feeling depressed. It is a difficult journey and you need to be in the right frame of mind to succeed. You can do this. It just take some good old fashioned will power. Sure, you can have whatever you want before your surgery but have smaller portions. Slowly change what you are eating to better choices and it wont seem so extreme to you, worked wonders for me. Best of luck to you, keep us posted. :D

Sorry you're going through this. I had the six month requirement as well. Believe it or not, the time does really go quickly! I've got my fifth appointment next week so I'm about 5-6 weeks away from getting a date. Take this time to work on the things that you'll need to do post-op (not drinking during meals, eating small bites, chewing thoroughly, etc.) It helps me feel like I'm making forward progress. I was just talking to my cousin at lunch today and told her I was actually happy to have this six month period to prepare myself mentally for my new life. You'll get there, just hang on!

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
