Craving Pizza, Surgery Tuesday. Help!

Recommended Posts

Veterans I need some guidance. I'm on my pre-op diet having surgery on Tuesday. I am desperately craving pizza like seriously. I just want to enjoy a slice of pizza and be done with it. I've lost about 12 pounds so far and my tummy has shrank a bit which the doc says is good. Wants me to lose as much as I can by Tuesday. I've been losing about 2-3 pounds a day. I've contemplated if the the surgeon will really know if I stick to the diet in the morning, pizza in the evening (don't go overboard) and Saturday on out back to the plan religiously.

Has anyone cheated so close to the big day? Is this normal? What was your experience?

Please and thank you

My doctor does not put his patients on a pre-liquid diet. He just requires us not to eat after 10 pm the night before surgery, and to have a lite dinner. If you have several days to go before surgery...you might be safe. Though I am not trying to discredit how your doctor does things...I am just saying I didn't do the pre liquid diet and did okay. Everyone is different. Also...I had no post operative vomiting.

I also didn't have to do the pre-op liquid diet. I had to lose 5% of my weight prior to surgery, and not eat or drink past midnight the night before. I had mild nausea after the procedure was done, but that's how my body reacts to pain meds. I don't see it causing any issues.

I was supposed to be liquid pre-op but the Protein Shakes made me want to vom so I just ate some type of lean Protein instead of drinking them... I'd say get the food funerals out of the way now by making sure all those unhealthy tempting foods are out if the house now rather than post op when you'll be dying to just have a bite of something.

I also wasn't on a pre-op diet... my doctor wanted whatever weight loss that could occur to happen. Then I am sure that bowel prep cleaned everything out

My doc was the same way...lose as much as u can. I also craved pizza. I took half a sandwich round, pizza sauce, low fat cheese, and turkey sausage crumbles and made a pizza! It's not Pizza Hut but at about 175 calories--it was delicious!!!!! Good luck next week!

I was on 2 weeks of liquids and one of my doc's reasons was not only to shrink the liver, but to clean out the intestinal tract as well. He did not do a bowel prep, so I had to be GOOD. I did not have a single bite of ANYthing I shouldn't have. Before I started the liquids though...I got ALL of the food funerals out of the way. I did miss one item that still haunts me though.

You need to know what your doc's purpose for the pre op diet is. If he wants clean plumbing before then--then don't do it.

STAY STRONG!!!

This is likely going to be the hardest test you will go through right now. It is really REALLY hard pre-sleeve. Just know this going in, when you come out of surgery you will have a few weeks of relief from food cravings. You only have a few days to get through.

I did a lot of praying for strength back then (I do still to this day!!!) and it really helped a lot. I don't know what your beliefs are, but whatever you have to do - meditate - look deep inside yourself and FILL YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE SELF TALK!!! You CAN do this, you really really can!

May your day be filled with peace and much patience. Again, STAY STRONG!!!

Something else to consider, you will want to go into your surgery as healthy as you possibly can. This is a big deal, and the Surgeon is going to have sharp instruments inside you. The reason he is having you go through this pre-op diet is to shrink your liver. Fatty livers are huge and slippery, and shrinking it as much as possible as well as having as much fat released from it will help it not be so slippery too. It is for your health's sake you should not stray from your diet.

*hugs*

I'm on the liquid diet too and I have cravings too...especially when my son and husband order pizza! But... I remind myself of the end result...I don't want the surgeon to refuse my surgery becuase I didn't follow the plan. I have dodged office parties too and my cowprkers are so supportive they remind me that I can do it! I think that that has helped me the most. Having a good support group. They have really kept me going. I hope this helps?

I didn't have any type of restrictions pre-op. All I had to do was not eat after midnight before the surgery. I would check with your doc first.

Stick to your guns and stay on your surgeons diet. He gave it to you for a reason! I did 24 days of Clear Liquids and there were so many points that I wanted to eat something, but I knew that I shouldnt.....so I didnt. This journey isnt only about food - It's also about knowing we can do something without giving up half way through. Dont give up before youve really begun. You can do it!

Are you on a liquid diet or just a low carb "lose some weight" diet?

If your surgeon expects you to be on a liquid diet, he's expecting an empty bowel and I'd hate for your pizza to be hanging out in there when he does the surgery!

If it's just a low carb, or lose some weight diet, do a search for "crustless pizza." It's made with meat as the crust and tastes surprisingly good.

Of course, I'm on low carb and had a tea latte yesterday so I might not be the best person to ask. But it was worth the extra carbs for me to get that latte and I was a saint for the rest of the day!!

I'm going in on April 10, too!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
