Post Op Lactose Intolerance...why?

Recommended Posts

I'm one of the unlucky ones who is now lactose intolerant after surgery...and I love dairy! Why does this happen? Was anyone lactose intolerant (who wasn't before surgery) shortly after surgery, then became more tolerant of dairy later on? I want to be able to drink milk again, and am very bummed by this development. I am two weeks post op.

I'm almost four weeks post op and going through the same thing. Yogurt doesn't bother me, but milk does. I NEVER had an issue with lactose either, so it sucks that I do now. From what I understand, it's because lactose can be hard to digest, and your stomach just went through a major upheavel. Most people a few months out don't seem to have an issue, and I hope the same is true for us

Me too. I starting eating cottage cheese and got diarrhea almost immediately. I didn't realize the connection until 3 days later. I quit eating it and now I'm fine.

I also am having this problem and I love milk, but I have found that the lactaid pills have helped a great deal and I can drink milk again without the diarrhea. It's worth a try to not miss something you love and isn't bad for you.

I got the pills and bought some lactaid milk today. I just hope this isn't a permanent problem. No dairy forever without first having to take a pill would suck....but I guess its a fair trade in the grand scheme of things.

I have been lactose intolerant for about 20 years. There is a lot of products out in the market now. Lactaid brand not only has milk, but yogurt, ice cream and cottage cheese. Cabot cheeses are naturally lactose free. I am sure there are a lot more products out there. No need to miss out.

I became lactose intolerant post-op and I still am at almost 9 months out. I have seen other members post that they were only lactose intolerant for the first few months and then somewhere between 3-6 months they returned to being to have any dairy.

The first couple of weeks after surgery the only Protein powder I tolerated well was the Unury chicken flavor, but after about the second week I could have Gold Standard whey without a problem. I can eat greek yogurt and firm cheeses, but no other dairy products. I have learned to like soymilk for everything except hot chocolate. I have Soy Latte and sometimes at night soy milk with a little sugar free caramel Syrup. I don't eat whipped cream, iced cream, cream-based Soups (such as Clam Chowder - so sad because I live right by the coast!!), or soft cheeses, or Desserts made with cream.

I took a Lactaid pill along with my cottage cheese and no problem whatsoever. What a blessing.

So I think I may be experiencing this, and I know this is an old thread, but I'm not getting diarrhea after eating some ice cream, I had an hour of extreme cramping that suddenly stopped. They are very painful (a 10 on a scale of 1-10). Does anyone know if this is related to being lactose intolerant? I haven't had it from drinking regular milk (though I rarely drink this, even pre surgery I only drank soy), but I just noticed it twice when I ate ice cream.

This is an old post, but I had the same issue yesterday. Had 5 ounces of Kefir (yogurt-based drink) and for the rest of the day had severe, debilitating cramps which would only go away with pain pills and sleep. Today, no dairy at all, and I am fine. While I am bummed...I hope this is it because I have been worried about all the pain I have been having!

For some reason I have become slightly lactose intolerant prior to surgery I can have everything but milk I have to have lactaid

I just realized that my post-surgery cramping and nausea is probably caused by lactose intolerance. Pre-surgery I had a tiny bit of intolerance, but now any dairy except mozzarella, hard cheeses, and yogurt causes terrible cramping. *sigh* I love dairy. I hope it goes away soon.

I was searching for this topic and came across this thread. After my surgery, I'm now lactose intolerant. I'm four months out and I can tolerate a tiny bit of cheese or yogurt, but too much of either or any amount of milk and I get stomach pain and diarrhea. I hope this is a temporary effect and goes away eventually!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
