It's going to go great, and you're going to be so happy you did this.

I had surgery two weeks ago, and I remember getting really nervous a couple of days before. Then something happened that got me refocused again. I was back home for Christmas, and my dad, who has been morbidly obese my entire life (I'm 36), has essentially become completely immobile. He has lost a lot of weight in the last year (mostly because he can't get up to get his own food), but the lifetime of problems that have accumulated because of his weight (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, destroyed knees, bad discs, incontinence, etc.) aren't reversing and probably won't because he waited too long to do anything about it. He had an opportunity to have gastric bypass four years ago, and didn't do it because he was scared. He still can't accept responsibility and acknowledge that any of his problems are due to his weight. In any event, my mom was supposed to come back to Dallas with me to help take care of my toddler while I was in the hospital and recovering at home, so that my husband could be with me. But because my dad is in such bad shape, she ended up having to stay home to take care of him. It was very upsetting to her that she wasn't going to be with me, and to me that we had to round up friends and ask them to use vacation days to take care of our child. I almost rescheduled, then I thought, "this is exactly why I'm doing this."

Surgery is scary, but to me, essentially being bedridden while having your full mental faculties at the age of 63 is terrifying. That may never change for him, but it's not going to become my life, and I'm not going to do that to my child. And it's not going to be your life either. You're going to make this change, and be there for your family in the long run, even if it means you're going to be sitting on the bench for the next few weeks.

This is one of the hardest any of us will ever do. However, this has been the most rewarding for myself. There are times when I find myself worried that I'm in a stall, but after reading stuff from other members of our BIG LOSER's ClUB, I have decided to just go through the process and enjoy each new day. Today and the past few days I have had some NSV's (non surgery victories) like being able to bend down and tie my shoes and a tremendous burst of energy. Loving it. Even if I'm thinking about being in a stall, I get so into trying to trigger weight loss that I wasn't enjoying today. So, today I am choosing to trust that my weight will come off.

Love it..... ;)

Joiebean you will do great. Keep the mental focus positive, and just follow the doctors guidelines to the "T" and you will be successful. Everyone reminds us, get the fluids in -it really is most important in the first few weeks. The Protein and food will come, but you will not feel well if you get dehydrated. Please, listen to your body!

Sending positive thoughts and prayers.

Jkwkgrl - wow, that is a lot to think about *your dad* just as you are preparing for surgery. Someone once said to me "how many obese elderly do you see, let alone super obese?" that was my "AH HA" moment. You did the right thing for you and your family. Hope your dad is doing well, maybe he can just start by moving a little to feel better?

Smiles all - keep positive,

Sandy

Wow, thank you for all the support everyone! I find out today what time I report to the hospital tomorrow. I just found out last night that my husbands Aunt and Uncle (really close to them, but they live a few hours away) had it done not to long ago. They didn't tell anyone. His uncle actually got ordained to marry us in 2008....so they are very special...and very thorough thinkers. Between everyone here and them, I am really feeling great support. My husband is of course here for me too, but if you haven't been through this, its hard to understand the mental part.

THanks everyone! And my best to you all! "See you" on the other side of surgery!!

I'm right there with you Joiebean.

I have to be at the hospital tomorrow morning at 5am. Thats great to me, because I get up early anyway, so I will be happy to get there and get it done.

On my preop Dr appt, the dr said "the surgery after you will either be 45 minutes or 3 hours." I said, "How long will mine be??"

"Oh, you'll be 45 minutes." He said.

I was relieved!

He said it would be an hour an 15 minutes from the time they take me back until my wife can come in and see me!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
