Am I Cheating On Liquid Diet?

Recommended Posts

I wasn't given specific guidelines for preop liquid diet, just postoperative. I was told 6 days of full liquids and 1 day of clear.

I am mainly following the postop full liquid diet guidelines, but I am not JUST drinking Protein Shakes. I have had Soup out for the last three nights. The first was a cup of chicken tortilla at red robin, and they blended it for me. Second was hot and sour at a fav Chinese place and they left out all that was chunky for me and then blended the egg and tofu. Tonight was a bowl of Vietnamese pho, just the broth, and then while shopping an orange Julius with Protein boost, which was higher sugar I know, it was 175 cal. I am averaging 800-1000 calories per day and 60 g of protein. I have had an occasional bite of real food but chewed it to death and kept it to a bite or two, except for a run in day 2 with 1/2 c of Chex mix.

It's hard for me to feel too bad about it when I see such wide variance in practice. The other surgeons in this practice, I was told, would not be requiring a liquid diet preop at all with my bmi. I know thats just me trying to rationalize...lol.

I'd say don't sweat it. You're keeping your calorie load down and your Protein up. The point of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver and prepare you emotionally for the post-op diet. It also gives you a jump start on your weight loss.

Just keep doing your best, watch your calories, and look for things to do to keep your mind off the upcoming surgery.

Yep, I agree with UXGrrl. I'm sure the liquid diet is HARD but just stick with it, just think that every pound that comes off before surgery is one you don't have to lose after!

So true that each pound lost preop is one I dont have to lose later. I am hoping it's a bit easier to be on liquid diet post op. right now the idea of a full week of clear liquids....omg!!!

The diet you have been following is much closer to the post-op liquids, that's for sure.

The pre-op liquid is basically Protein shakes, clear broth (not pureed broth), Jello, apple or white grape juice, popscicles.

Some doctors do shakes and 1 lean meat meal a day. I doubt this would cancel your surgery or anything drastic. But I would definitely make sure I did the Clear Liquids a day or two before so that my system was clean before going into surgery.

I hate to say this because I don't want anyone to think that they can do it and all will be fine. I believe that docs do it for a reason for some people need it for medical reasons. Here goes...I ate Big Macs, burritos, chips, Cookies and eberything i could get my hands on up until the day before surgery! I saw my doc the day before surgery and was completely honest because i didn't want to die in surgery!!! He told me that in my case it would be fine so I was very lucky! If you call your doc and discuss it with him it might make you feel better. GOOD LUCK!

I had surgery on 12/13, an I would not consider eating at this point even afte chewing tons. My doc has me on 2 weeks clears, 2 week fulls, 2 weeks, pureeds, 2 weeks mushies, but I am going a tiny bit faster than that. Just be careful hun!

oh well, i didn't eat anything like that wink.png good to know it was still okay in your case.

My doc said that primarily the diet was for liver shrinkage, and since I was already lower BMI at time of surgery it wasn't a big deal that I had some chex mix. The rest of it was absolutely within the full liquid guidelines, he said.

Again, YMMV, each doc has different guidelines. It all worked out fine for me. The Soups were fine, perhaps a little higher fat than they would prefer with one of them. The hot and sour Soup they told me was a great choice blended. Depending on preparation of course. PF Changs, for instance, though, is pretty good as far as being low carb, low fat.

I feel fortunate I never had to do any sort of pre-op diet, only 12 hrs before surgery. As for worrying about the 1 or 2 wks of liquid diet after surgery- not to worry. Your body goes through such a major change, between your recovery process and adjusting to your new stomach, you will not have issues with with the liquid diet.< /p>

Good luck!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
