Some Questions-1 Week Post Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I was sleeved last Wednesday, December 7th, and while reading these boards I have gotten a bit worried. Everyone seems to have been on full liquids right after surgery, and while I was until Saturday, my doctor told me to move on to the mushies. Right now puréed Soup, Protein Shakes, and Greek yogurt work for me best, but I was able to have some puréed lentils and black Beans and some very very mushy mashed potatoes. Is this normal so soon? I mean my surgeon gave the ok, but I was never told liquids for 2 weeks after, and it seems the norm on these boards. I also seem to be easily eating 1/2 cup of those things... I live in NYC and walk everywhere and so I am already walking 2 miles a day so perhaps I am just burning everything?

Also, my multi Vitamin has always made me a bit queasy, even when I was trying different brands before surgery, but tonight I actually spent 15 minutes throwing it up... Any advice for those?

Thank you all for reading...I want to make sure this works, so I just want to make sure I am making the most of it!!

My doctor is also one who moves you into real foods quickly. We don't even really have a "mushy" stage. It was kind of included in the full liquids. Then at 2 weeks it was soft foods (basically anything except dry meats and fresh veggies) then at 4 weeks (which I hit yesterday) the fresh veggies got added (Yeah salads! even if it is only a tablespoon full)

Each doctor or clinic seems to have their own plan. I say follow your doctors plan, and unless something doesn't sit well then you must be doing OK.

As for the vitamin-Have you tried the Gummy chewables? costco has large bottles of Adult Gummy Vitamins and also Gummy Calciums.

So I wouldn't worry too much how others move through the stages (I've seen several who do full liquids for 4 weeks or more post-op)and just follow your doctors suggestions.

Thanks DebiC!!!!

It good to just hear some reassurance from someone other than my own head haha!

I have not heard about the costco brand, but I will def be going there tomorrow haha! Anything has to be better than the chalky ones I have now...tonight it was like being on the morphine in the hospital again...instant toilet hugging. So gross :)

It really depends on the surgeon. There doesn't seem to be a really well established progression of diet for sleeve patients yet... some surgeons go based on what is recommended for gastric bypass patients (which is sort of applicable) or lap band patients. Some go based on their own intuition or past experience.

FWIW, I was was on Clear Liquids the first 24 hours after surgery, then they started bringing me cartons of Lactaid milk (2 a day for "snacks"). Then they moved me to full liquids for 2 meals, then they had me on purees for about 3 meals. I'm supposed to stay on purees for 3 weeks and then gradually move to soft foods, and then switch to normal diet 3 weeks after that. So, I was discharged on purees.

It seemed kind of a fast advance to me compared to the others I have read, but the surgeon is head of Bariatrics at mayo Clinic, so I figured he knew what he was doing ;-)

I think the most important thing is to not rush and really pay attention to how your body is reacting. For example, I was doing really well for awhile... measuring my portions, waiting between bites, not overeating...

... and then I tried to do too much exercise and pulled my left stomach muscle, the one that everyone always seems to complain about. A pain increase, combined with a couple days of not getting enough fluids, combined with a cranky mood from a sudden stall on the scale, lead to a perfect storm of overeating at lunch and getting my first experience of "the slimes". uuughhhhhhhh!

Lesson learned, and then some.

I was sleeved on Dec 7th. And haven't lost any weight and I am starving. Could the surgeon have not taken enough of my stomach? I can eat and drink just about anything I was in all amounts. I'm on liquids but have added in small amounts of Soups and eating mushy foods.

I moved to mushies after a week too. no problems, just take it slow and add one thing at a time.

as for the Vitamins, as somebody else said try the gummies, also take them right before you go to bed. this way you are sleeping before they can make you sick. (believe me it works) sometimes our head plays tricks on us and while the actual pill might not be making you sick anymore the thought of how it has made you feel in the past can bring it right back up again, if you get my drift.

sounds like you are doing great otherwise. congrats!

You could also try a whole food type Vitamin. I can never take the artificial vitamins; they make me so sick. I discovered the whole food ones when I was pregnant. The only issue is the ones I take now are like horse pills, so I'm wondering if that will make it impossible to swallow them when I'm sleeved.

Wow...all these replies might just make me hungry! I was sleeved on the 5th and am on clear fluids until the 21st, then full liquids for another 4 weeks, then purees and soft foods for 2 - 4 weeks more. Once in a while I get really hungry for a bite or two of something, but have resisted. For the most part I could care less. Mostly, I find it hard to believe that I am functioning as well as I am on only 300 calories a day.

The differences in the pre and post-op diets I've seen different people have has been one of the most confusing things to me. There is such a wide range. What I'm doing, and would recommend to you, is to follow your surgeon's eating plan.

I hope the ideas for different Vitamins work for you. I can't stand mine, they are from the Dr's office, but right now they are the only thing I've chewed for 9 days so I'll take them, but will be looking for chewable gummies soon!!!!

Best of luck....

Troblyer-You need to give yourself some time. You probably still have Water weight gain from the surgery. Also the liquids can go down much easier than solids do. So you can consume larger amounts. Are you getting in enough Proteins? When do you see your surgeon again? If you are that hungry I would definitely call him or the nutritionist if one is available. I don't see how it could be possible to not lose weight on a liquids only diet unless your liquids were loaded with sugars and fats.

I'm sorry you are having a rough time and I hope it gets better. Hang in there.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
