Confused About Foods That Contain Protein And Portions To Eat After 2 Weeks Post Op

Recommended Posts

Ok so I will be 3 weeks post op this next wednesday and I just started my mushies recently. I been having half of 1 scramble egg with a bit of fat free cheese and I made this with a bit of lactose free fat free milk. I can only eat half, I think I probably can eat the whole egg but I stopped when I feel full. I want to try to get as much as Protein I can with only food so I can have at least 2 shakes of protein a day and complete the rest of my protein intake with foods. Anyone can recommend me a website or something where to calculate how much protein, calories etc you are eating. I am confused because I don't know much protein is in every food I eat. So far I tried refried Beans and I able to eat 2 tsp at once, with a sprinkle of cheese. I can't eat much beans ( I LOVE them ) but they are causing more gas than I already have :(. How much you could eat at almost 3 weeks out? what are some normal portions to eat? Is half an egg ok? I don't want to over eat. Is hard for me because when I get full,I don't have any signs like burps or chest pain :( I am taking my time eating,I ate half an egg in about 20 minutes and then I wait 30 minutes to sip on something.TIA

It looks like you are doing well. At 3 weeks, my portions were very small, too. I can barely eat a whole egg now at 3.5 months post-op.

Most meats have Protein and many foods have a nutrition label that tells you how many grams of Protein are in a serving. If you aren't eating a whole serving, be sure to divide the grams of protein by how much you are eating. For instance, one egg has about 6g of protein. If you eat half of one, you ate 3g of protein.

I use My Fitness Pal to log my food, primarily so that I can see how much protein I'm getting a day and don't have to keep a running number in my head. It's easy to use on the computer or on a smart phone, and I have only had two foods that weren't listed in the approximately 30 days I've been using it.

There are also websites online where you can look up how much protein is in the foods you are eating. Many restaurants have nutritional information on their websites as well, in case you like to dine out.

Myfitnesspal is great, like Lissa said. I am only one week ahead of you and we are at the same eating stage. I also drink 2 Protein shakes a day prepared with 8 ounces of Lactaid skim milk for a total of 72 grams of Protein because there is no way to get a lot of protein from foods at this point. (that must be the longest sentence ever!)

In regards to eggs, I have eaten 3/4 of a boiled one with mayo (egg salad) and it was too much. I will try 1/2 next time. For all other Proteins like chicken, lactose free cheese etc, I weigh half an ounce and pair it with 1/2 ounce of cooked vegetable. I come close to finishing that. As the days go by, I am sure I will be able to add more. Lately I have been eating between 570 calories to 735. I say if you can eat a whole egg, go for it. Perhaps sometime soon you can drink 1-1/2 Protein shake, versus 2.

By the way, I use full fat mayo, full fat cheeses & real Peanut Butter. I do use skim milk because I am used to it and I consume 16 ounces a day. I feel the amount we consume is so small, I might as well savor something that tastes yummy. I am not trying to change your mind about your choices though. We all know what works for us.

Did I answer your questions?

P.S. In regards to the Beans I am going to email my NUT to ask if it is ok to take an enzyme supplement to help me digest them. (Even though she prefers me to eat protein from animal sources.)

during mushies, chicken, tuna and egg salad have a lot of Protein.

You can google Protein calculator and I bet something would come up that had

the exact amount of protein in each source. I know I have seen one online.

I sill drink a protein shake once a day because I am not a Breakfast eater and I love my shakes. I also eat a pudding called Pro pudding by Body Tech . it has 25 grams of protein and 4 carbs. I got it at the Vitamin shoppe but if you don't have a Vitamin Shoppe , you can get it at Amazon for the cheapest shipping.

eggs (esp scrambled) go down hard. I can eat two poached eggs (sunny side up) no prob. Still have trouble with scrambled eggs (6 months out). A food scale comes in handy right at first. I don't use it anymore but did use it alot at first. Then you will get used to what portion size looks like. :)..............only 8 more lbs until I hit goal.....seems like a DREAM!!!

I used an app for my phone called fat secret. It is like a journal for all the food you eat. It is pretty awesome. I can even scan the upc code and it will automatically save the food to the journal. It keeps track of your Protein, calories, fat grams, carbs etc for you. I think you can use it online if you dont have a smart phone. When I was having trouble keeping track of how much I needed or had already had, I would just look at fat secret and I knew what I needed to eat for my next meal.

I am 3 weeks out of surgery... and I can only at about a tablespoon at a time. However..this morning I did eat 1/4 cut of thinned oatmeal...it took me 50 mins to eat it all. But, it went perfectly. For lunch I tried 1 oz of low fat cheese and 1/4 c of tuna salad... it didn't happen. I ended up eating 1/2 oz of cheese and 1/8th of a cup of Tuna salad! Still...that is progress and as long as it gets better each day...I think all is going well. I still do 2 Protein Drinks with 4 oz of skim milk each day...at the end of the day I eat and drink about 550-600 calories...and get in about 50 oz of liquids. All in all...I think that is pretty good. I feel great! I say...let your new tummy tell you what you can and can't do...that varies between all of us!

God bless! :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
