Help! No Weight Loss - Over 1 Year Out Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Recommended Posts

I know my clothes arent stretched out.....lol........nothing I have fits anymore, I gave all my larger clothes away so I have to buy new ones!! I went from size 3/4 to a 12.......

I drink Protein Drinks and eat chicken for my daily Protein (allergic to fish) and sometimes low fat yoguart, drinks are crystal lite, Water, goal is 64 oz most days I do make it.... I work nights so its harder because then Im up and down all day and dont get enough sleep. I eat unsweet Jello and occassional unsweet popcicles, occasional salad with lowfat dressing or none, and low sodium Soups. I can only eat small amounts which is expected, but then Im hungry.....catch 22. I dont over eat, never been nauseated or vomited.

Heartburn is when Im hungry, and sometimes after I eat, never when lying down tho.

Im a nurse so I do alot of walking, but, I also walk a mile daily at 3.5mph extra.

My tape measure doesnt show any changes nor does the scale.< /p>

Maybe its just my slow metabolizm, age, and smaller size, but I would expect something in 2 months. Im just so frustrated.

Yes' date=' I agree with all of the numbers - but I'm telling you - I know it SEEMS impossible - but that's not the issue with her. She's active and is consuming very few calories. I was just with her for a solid week and saw everything she ate. She's not sneaking in shakes or high-calorie foods or crazy amounts of carbs or anything. She eats Protein, drinks Water - everything.

She has kept track of her intake and it just doesn't make any sense. In the beginning I assumed that she was probably taking in too many calories or that her sleeve wasn't actually restricting her food intake or that she was grazing all the time.

She's NOT. Something else is amiss here. Does anyone else have any experience with this - beyond the basics of calories in, calories out?[/quote']

Another reason she isn't losing could possibly be that she's taking in too FEW calories. If she's active and watching what she's eating, too few calories would result in the body going into whats known as " starvation mode" meaning that her body isn't getting what it needs so it stores whatever calories it can as fat for fuel. It's a normal response the body has to low calorie intake. It stores as much as it can for fuel to keep all the body's systems from shutting down. Perhaps a 300-500 calorie increase per day will jump start her weight loss. I'd give it a shot since she isn't losing anyway. Google "Starvation Mode" for more info. Good luck!

I didn't read all the responds so someone might have recommended this .. I'm not sleeve yet but have she thought about getting another weightloss surgery .. The sleeve is the first step to doing the bypass I no the " bypass " but it's a thought it might help her restart her weightloss ..

Hello,

I know this post was written many years ago but I am hoping you can help me!

I had my surgery 11/30/13 and so I am currently 15 months post-op. I have only lost 60 lbs I still have about 60 to go.

HW 290 SW 284 CW 229

First off I never got assigned a NUT like I see many other people on these sights do. I never went to a post op seminar but I was never invited to or rmeinded about it. Now I just found out that the hospital I had this at does offer them. Also they had out post surgical kits and I didn't get one because they were out that day? It had a bottle to help with Water intake a measureing spoon and guidelines on eating.

Anyway, I had all the stuff they gave me before surgery I did great until about 6 months out. THat's when I still eating bad again...meaning I ate what I wanted but less. Also I quit exersing regularly.

When I hit the year mark it was a wake up call January 1st I strated eating less carbs and joined myfitness pall which has me on a1200 calorie diet and I have been excersising 3-4 times a week. Well it's March and I have lost a whole 2 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!

I just don't get it!

I had blood work done and all is good???

I am thinking of going on Atkins? I don't know what else to do. It worked before but I gained it all backl now maybe it won't come back on because of te sleeve?

Also I still get crazt hungry in the afternoon is that normal?

I hope you are still on this website and can let me know what happend with your mom.

THanks!

I took three years to get to goal. I stalled after year one, then actually gained 22 pounds "eating what I want but less" I also tried a couple of plans to get that off (Southbeach phase one did get 5 off) then was introduced to the 5:2 plan (see in the Vets forum) That helped me to get to goal, and I use it to stay in maintenance as well.check

out this info if interested

Do you take a PPI? Sometimes hunger is acid production or thirst. Best of luck!

My psychiatrist told me she wasn't sure I would be successful with the sleeve bc when I had brain surgery and awoke from it, something "clicked" in my brain and I became a chocoholic (I was not a chocolate eater prior to brain surgery) her point is that the brain plays a large part in weight loss. Perhaps it has something to do with your mom's brain?

I tried every diet in the books. I was shamed for not losing, told that on the calories I consumed and the exercise I was doing, my failure to lose weight was "impossible." Finally, after I had Realize lap band, and did not lose weight, even on 300 calls/day and physical therapy 3x wk plus an hour of supervised aqua therapy per day, my band so full and tight i threw up every day, and I NEVER had anything sweet or rich, my surgeon said something else was wrong. Sent me to a metabolic specialist, and then another, and then another. They all said that the calories in calories out was an old adage known now to be false. Obesity is multi-causal, several chains of metabolic processes in play. I was diagnosed based on metabolic testing and history with a defect of adaptive thermogenesis. I suspect this is the problem with your mom. The good news is that the 10-20% of failed despite compliance bariatric patients has led to increased funding for obesity understanding and research. My metabolic specialist at Cornell says in ten years they will have more answers and a treatment for me, but I don't know if I have that long. Go to a metabolic doctor and be evaluated for this if you KNOW you are compliant, and still are not losing weight. It is bad enough to be fat, but to be shamed for something that isn't your fault, when you are doing everything you can, and nobody believes you, is AWFUL. Good luck.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
