Can I ever again have a beer?

Recommended Posts

I was told "no carbinated drinks....ever again", but have taken a sip of my husband's beer on three separate occasions. Any sleevers out there who can actually drink 12oz of beer on tap? I'm just curious.

I did. When we were on vacation. It did take me a while to get it down. I also did sip on his beer as well. Didn't have an issue. (Plus I haven't had another one since.)

Doctors are not going to recommend you having a beer... it is a lot of calories & carbs & doesn't do a thing for you nutritionally. That being said, I have a couple beers a month. It takes me about 3 hours to drink a pint because I don't want to have my stomach full of gas. I just returned from a trip to Ireland where I had at least a half a pint of Irish cider a day... not recommended, but enjoyed. Doctor vary on whether beer is okay. I have had no problems, but you have to realize that it will slow weightloss if it becomes a regular thing.

I had my first beer 7 months out and it was amazing!!! LOL I sip it slowly and get Miller Genuine Draft 64. It's the only occasional carbonation I have. Don't drink soda, don't miss it!

I've been drinking soda almost daily for almost 18 out of my 29 months post-VSG. No change in sleeve capacity, no exploding guts, no ulcers, nothing.

I'm not a beer drinker, but I love my rum/cokes ! ! !

I drink beer just about every weekend but not during the week. I can honestly say I can drink about the same now as I did before my surgery. It hasn't effected me at all. I think the key is moderation.

I got brave and had a beer and did fine with it the first time, sometimes I can handle a beer sometimes I can't. Seems like my pouch likes things one day and not another day. My Dr. definately says no beer, or carbination, but I had to try one this summer when at the lake. Beer and Lake just go together.

You know, since surgery I have NO tolerance for alcohol anymore! I drink about 1/4 of a beer and I'm tipsy. It's crazy. Anyway, I can drink a beer (or two) if I am not eating and sitting at the table for a long while. I still can't drink AND eat at the same meal or I don't have room for food, so drinking a beer with dinner isn't an option for me. So when hubby and I go hang out at our favorite Irish Pub, I can drink maybe two Guinness, sometimes three if it's a long night.

But oh, the scale hates me the next day and I get so incredibly DRUNK doing it! So I only do it about once every three months.

I am about 2 and a half months out from surgery and haven't braved having a beer yet. I have done vodka/cranberry (because of the low cal count) and it has gone well. I love the fact that all I want or need is 2 of them and I am done for the night. I have been too scared to try beer just because I feel like if I do it and it goes well then I'm going to want to have soda..... it's just too slippery of a slope for some of us!

I don't drink beer, so i can't answer this question, however, i do enjoy my sodas daily. . .diet of course. . so why can't you have carbonation ever? makes no sense. . . anyhow, i drink sodas, and alcohol with soda mix. . . love it and started drinking such (with doctors approval) at 3 months out. . . yes i said with doctors approval. . . and i'm out now 2 years and haven't died yet. . . hehehehe . . . good luck

Ive heard that the carbonation stretches the stomach. Im afraid of ruining all that ive worked so hard for.

I held off on drinking anything carbonated for 18 months, but I dearly missed my beer. I tried taking sips of beer but the carbonation really made me feel bloated. I tried flat beer (gross) so then I tried pouring it with as much head as possible. Surprise, it worked, I can drink it with no problems. I found that over the course of a few hours I could put down a 12 pack and it didn't bother me. (other than being tipsy) Of course I dont make a habit of this, I'll usually have a couple a few times a week.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
